Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

The vibration on one of my phones is so weak that I basically never feel or hear it, including when the phone is in the pocket of my leggings (so pressed against my thigh) or sitting on my wood coffee table. I can't find an option in the settings to adjust the vibration intensity.

But it's funny seeing everyone look at me when the MGS "!" sound plays. It's like I actually got spotted.

When my son was younger, his mom would call me a lot. Emperor's March.

I agree with you if you can put your phone in a pocket.

However as a counter-point: a lot of women keep their phone in a bag where they wouldn't necessarily feel it vibrate because women's clothing often doesn't even have pockets, so I can't really say they should mute their phone notifications.

I have no idea why chat apps default to making a sound when messages arrive and are sent when the screen is on though—that's entirely obnoxious, no excuse for leaving that enabled

So let's start adding pockets to womens clothing and stop the mandatory purse plague at its core.

I totally agree. My wife is an amazing person and learned to sew. She now makes customs clothing for people including our two girls. Since they were 3 and 4 they would say “look Dad! My dress has pockets!”

At this point 9 and 10 they no longer point it out because every thing they own has a pocket. Leggings, yeah side and back pocket. Pants, yeah an actual pocket sized for function and not one that fits a single mint. A dress, yeah a hidden pocket along the side seems. I am super happy my girls get to grow up with this small life adjustment.

As a "young" adult it absolutely baffles me people use notifications. I already check my phone enough without them, and if I did have notifications on I'd literally get a ding every 20 mins. If I'm expecting a call sure I'll turn them on, but apart from that it's an alien concept to me.

Nope, I have a different Owen Wilson 'wow' for each of my contacts and apps and it has (rarely) blurted put at exactly the right time during a meeting and been met with laughs.
So I'm keeping it.

My phone is always in do not disturb mode and only 1 person can ring me while in do not disturb mode. All texts and other notifications are forever silenced. It helps me focus and not become dependent on my phone.

But it doesn't really bother me if other people's sounds are on. Bigger things to worry about imo.

I mean the whole point of a notification is to well, notify. Vibration alone isn't always adequate. Unless it's going off repeatedly I don't see the issue. Some sounds are normal in public.

Personally my phone is always on vibrate except for calls from certain people.

I will never put my phone on silent it has noises for a reason, videos on the otherhand are always muted

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I'm silent at work, and vibration the rest of the time. I'm totally in agreement with you.

Well. It is a notification. It supposed to notify you have a notification. If i disabled the sound, i cant be notified. So it beat the purpose of having it disabled. What if i have it in my bag and i didnt notice the vibration?

Personally, I have a low ping sound and have mine on when i put it in my bag. Though, i put it on vibrate mode when the phone is in my hand or im in the middle of long texting.

But, i despise those loud cringe custom notification. Plus, android have new feature called notification cooldown, it minimise the haptic and sound within 10 minutes after the first notifications. It would be better if i can mute the sound after the first notification.

My partner is sick and could be hospitalized, I need to be reached by text. I can't hear or feel vibrations. Sorry, notifications are staying on.

I do keep mine on vibrate, with no sound, but I’ve found more recently that I’ve completely missed the vibration a fair few times. Sometimes in a fanny pack, a jacket pocket, or even in my pants pocket. The sound notification is probably more reliable

I work in a field that is essentially always on. If I am on a project I may have to stop what I am doing and go home to start working. It sucks but it pays well to cover my student loans and for my kids to be able to do the activity they want. If I miss an email from a client that needs a response I may lose the company that client. Then potentially after that my job.

Sorry it bothers you that I got an email. My family comes first.

Not sure what situation or event annoyed you but a broad blanket statement without consideration is just as wrong as whatever is annoying you.

Does this happen often?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

When I was younger my ringtone was a recording of me screaming. I think we would get along well.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Shut UP, MOM, I'm keeping my Halo Elite "wortwortwort" for emails and Kung Pow's Ling "WEEYOO" for work updates.

Seems OP only ever has his phone touching his body / on a hard surface.

If you have it in a piece of clothing that isn't touching you, like in a jacket pocket that's not touching your stomach, or in a bag of some sort, a notification buzz without sound is easy to miss.
