As a result, OpenAI has chosen to monetize ChatGPT and its associated products in an all-you-can-eat software subscription model, or otherwise make money by other people productizing it. In both of these scenarios, OpenAI loses money.

How sustainable are these business practices under heavy competition?

I’m not sure Ed has ever said that. He’s talking about the fact that OpenAI has never made money and isn’t in any danger of doing so ever with their current business model.
