I often go for a loose pun for the title, but this time I tried more of a scattershot of association with >!the merry men: Maid Marian, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, Little John, and Much the Miller's Son!< - hopefully not too left field!

If the new type of clue was 2 across, I might not have gotten it, except the rest of the answers filled it in for me, which is pretty typical for clues I'm not familiar with, so I think it worked well enough! I can see how something like that would be helpful for creating such a tight grid.
If it was something else, I really didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, besides maybe the title which seemed odd at first but helped me fill in the anagram quite nicely. π
Yeah it was 2 across I was curious about. I have done roman numerals in the past without much complaint, but was interested to see how this could go because strictly speaking they are numbers!
