THE POLICE PROBLEM

3352 readers
1936 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

All I see is peaceful looting, surely they are insured.

This is not my actual take, but too many people on this site cheer when it's masked "protesters" robbing businesses but wag their finger at this? I mean, you never see a post titled "THE RIOTER PROBLEM".

Choose a moral standing that isn't tied to political football.

I don't believe in God, but for shits and giggles, maybe this thing exists. I give it a little prayer every day and I say to myself, or to the magical creature, please God, Nuke America. I think we're too goddamn stupid to have an armed revolution. We're just going to keep standing in the ways of cars, getting run over at protests by dumbass neo-Nazis. While the Democrats just sit there with their thumb up their ass. Like Nancy Pelosi just counting money instead of doing her fucking job. Big tited, bored housewife got tired of drinking wine became a politician. Now she's got the sellout genocide supporting AOC as her little pet. But yet, you know, none of this matters because America is an imperialist empire. And fascists are the useful idiots of empire. And when capitalism is in crisis, especially inside of the imperial core, well, you're going to see some terrible things happen. One day, they're going to use drones, killer drones, on American citizens, and AOC allowed that to be signed in a defense bill.

All you fucking idiots are OK with this if you didn't immeditantly go out and flag every grandma that's 5 over.

In authoritarian regimes it isn't uncommon for the state officers and soldiers to engage in casual theft along side their official duties. With the way our country is going, there is a non-zero chance this was an actual ICE officer just working his "side hustle".

It’s naïve to think that this behavior hasn’t been common already for decades, likely centuries

Everybody pretends to be an ICE agent to steal or commit violence, it is an utterly illegitimate mob of thugs loyal to a dictator.

The only thing that isn't pretend about ICE is the bigotry and violence.

I see no meaningful difference between these people and "actual ICE agents".

[–] [email protected] 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The meaningful difference is the relief felt by this poor woman when she discovered she was just being robbed, not deported.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 week ago

just being robbed, not ~~deported~~.

Remember, in the US, you can be charged for obstructing a plain-clothes officer's duties even before they ID themselves. (I'm not a lawyer but you could refer to 18 USC 111 or 18 USC 1501, or the fact that police don't need to know the law properly to enforce it, Heien v. North Carolina)

And, fake-ICE cosplayers like this guy can have their charges dropped by DOJ or pardoned by Trump.

So if you get visited by someone unknown, you're damned if you do or you don't. Demand a judicial warrant and wait to receive one with an actual judge's signature, before you open the door to agents you don't know.

After the guy left the lady was probably like “thank god that wasn’t an ice agent.”

You can tell he's not a real ICE agent because his face isn't covered.

for an image in a comment, just put the text in the square brackets at the very beginning!

normally it should look like this:

you can go back to add alt text in a comment by editing it too!

Ah, thank you. You might be the person that told me this before! I was thinking that space would appear as hyperlink text. Going to save this one.

Edit: Weirdly, I don't see the alt text. Maybe it works differently in different apps/formats
