1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

God damn. That unit looks like something you find in the futuristic labs of Deus Ex and System Shock 2.

So that's where all the Ambrosia's going

Cool, I have one of those too. You should post updates when the Seedling actually start growing.

What did you plant?

The box had a starter pack of herbs. So I’ve got dill, thyme, parsley, mint and two types of basil (very hyped to make Thai basil curry)

I had one like this for years. When you dispose of the old plugs, try and keep the plastic parts. You can cut them some to get the roots out, but at least the top half. You can buy rock wool and other substrates to grow your own seeds, and the plastic part can be handy to keep the new substrate in place.

Have fun! These are really quite easy to use and fun.

Fyi "basil" is not the same thing as "thai basil"

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It has Thai basil and “genovese” basil

Love Thai basil. Makes everything kind of taste like crawfish boil

Both of them grow extremely fast in these aero gardens

I'm still trying to figure out how to bonsai it so that it doesn't overtake the entire thing and end up as a woody mess with a couple leaves pressed right up against the LEDs. I end up restarting my basil every year because so far I have been unsuccessful. I use a lot of basil and make a lot of pesto, but it's never enough.

So we don't have one of these fancy-shmancy setups, we have an indoor greenhouse.....pod....thing....with dirt.....

ANYWAY

Pinch off the flowers as soon as the start to come up, don't even let them open. We've been keeping the same basil plant going for 4 years, and just propagated 2 new ones from cuttings. Apparently once they flower they basically give up and go all woody and beg for death.

Cute! What a cool looking object! I hope you grow some lovely plants!

Edit: lol who downvoted me for this? Why?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wonder what kind of plant it gone be.

[–] Sturgist 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A hydroponically grown one!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

It gonna be weed ain't it?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I recommend that you focus on lettuce rather than herbs. From my experience you can never keep up with the amount of basil that will pop out of that thing.

I’ll probably switch to salads once I get the hang of it. I do have a dehydrator and work has a food pantry, so I’m sure it’ll all end up being used.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is it aeroponics or hydroponics?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Everything refers to it as hydroponics, not sure what the difference would be. Novice gardener with a shriveled brown thumb.

It looks like Miracle Grow bought them out and shut them down, which is shit.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Hydroponics is generally where roots sit in water

Aeroponics is generally where roots sit in air/environment with precipitating humidity

I've had pretty good luck at transplanting after the herbs get big. Also a dehydrator is nice.

That's a really good deal, especially if it came with a seed pack.
