What innovations did he make in "modern" cheerleading?

[–] CaptainSpaceman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Im guessing he was the reason Penn & Teller had to do a Bullshit! episode on the subject

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 10 points 9 hours ago

If I had to guess, financialization.

[–] Jerb322@lemmy.world 29 points 15 hours ago

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Tennis with ping pong paddles and a whiffle ball.

[–] vikingtons@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

this mf whiffed and died lmao

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

or more likely (knowing absolutely nothing about his health or injury besides his age), i'd guess he had vision problems because he's 76, the vision problems combined with a rotation on the court caused him to trip and hit his head or break a bone in his torso/pelvis/femur and that hit or break was enough to cause whatever other health problems he had to overwhelm him.

i have a friend who was, for a brief time, the leading authority in the world in knocking over old people and her professional opinion is that most falls (like over 2/3 of them) are caused by vision problems. Keep your eyes checked as you age, and make sure your parents and grandparents (if they're still alive) have current prescriptions because falls can kill you way easier than you think.

This makes it sound like she out there pushing them over

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

When I first referred to her biomechanical engineering PhD this way her husband spat across the room. They are very dear friends.

[–] vikingtons@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

appreciate you lookin out 🥰

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Well someone has to. The old people certainly can't.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 13 hours ago

Tennis with pickles for balls

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Tennis for out of shape people

[–] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

That's badminton isn't it ?

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Trade the shuttlecock for a whiffleball and you're there.

The hell is pickleball

Apparently something like tennis, but on a badminton court.

invented in 1965 as a children's backyard game

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (2 children)

no, nothing is worse than badminton. besides maybe that speedwalking shit

[–] Revolver1864@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago

Hey it did give us the Black Cocks NZ badminton team in 2004

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Clearly you have not pickled the balls

But yes, speedwalking is worse than that

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

wait, just remembered that cup stacking bullshit that got forced on everyone for awhile that shit was even dumber

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Nobody was forced to stack those cups, either.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

definitely got pushed from down top, nobody would willingly stack cups for "sport" otherwise

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 13 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Old people tennis. I feel like the trend was going younger last year, but now I feel it's only for middle age people and older.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

badminton is old people tennis. i feel like pickleball is midlife crisis territory

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

A lower net. Plays a more like tiny tennis.

Been getting more and more popular over the decade, and it’s pretty huge in the states these days. If you’re in a major US metro, you know someone who plays it.

Let us use this opportunity to eliminate cheerleading altogether in his honor

[–] VM_Abrantes@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Counting or not counting sports-related injuries?

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Imagining he slammed is head on some very hard or sharp object near the court? It’s pretty difficult to do that much damage on a typical flat court surface falling.

[–] moondoggie@lemmy.world 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It might not have taken much. I hear the Kirk boys are prone to head injuries
