Personally I think newsmedia should be one sector not open to foreign ownership.

[–] Rumblestiltskin 1 points 2 years ago

I think that would be pretty hard to regulate with most news being on the internet. But we definitely need Canadians to follow and trust Canadian news sources not foreign news.

All of our news from one source.

[–] RandAlThor 7 points 2 years ago

Foreign owned conservative controlled media.

[–] troyunrau 9 points 2 years ago

That can't be good. Time to start our own newspaper.

Why should the Competition Bureau allow this?

[–] grte 4 points 2 years ago

They absolutely should not. They might just try to stop it , too. If the courts let them.

Joining a US RW maga conglomerate.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

just wait until Canada puts together a left-of-center media conglomerate (whatever the fuck "center" even is these days) and buys up a Timbit 20-pack of newspapers and talk radio stations in Maine, upstate New York, Michigan and North Dakota.

Then they'll be sorry.

[–] Grant_M 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Fight fire with fire! But I'm not sure about North Dakota 😺

[–] kent_eh 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

North Dakota is strong Trump/MAGA territory.

I figured so! Thank you.

Jesus fucking Christ.

On a second thought, that could either be good for Postmedia or bad for TorStar, depending on which becomes more like the other.

[–] SpaceCowboy 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I kinda feel like the Star is already indistinguishable from Postmedia.

Still not good to have the news be even more consolidated tho.

[–] lightrush 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Really? The Star is indistinguishable from The National Post or .. The Sun?

[–] SpaceCowboy 2 points 2 years ago

There have been many times I've seen some dumbass thing from the Star posted somewhere and I think "just some Postmedia crap." Takes a few minutes to remember that the Star isn't actually Postmedia.

[–] Grant_M 3 points 2 years ago

Bad for Canada.

[–] grte 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The Star has been moving in Postmedia's direction since it's sale. This is the completion of that.

[–] lightrush 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Interesting. What does that change look like from what you've noticed?

[–] grte 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not necessarily some huge change from the writing staff. But the editorial slant of the paper has felt like it's been getting closer to what you'd expect from a Postmedia paper like the Toronto Sun or the Calgary Herald.

I'll keep an eye. From the Cdn outlets, what's worth paying for that's not the CBC?

[–] grte 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Well, now that's slim pickings. I'm not the biggest fan of the Globe and Mail's slant, but they are Canadian owned so at least have that over Postmedia. Reuters is also Canadian owned (same owner as the Globe and Mail, the Thomson family), but is more internationally focused than Canada focused. Personally I read the Tyee, The Walrus, and The Maple, but those aren't dailies and they have a pretty clear political slant to the left if that's an issue for you. Of the larger networks that aren't CBC I tend to look at Global over CTV, but I'm not super in love with them either.

[–] lightrush 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I had no idea Reuters is Canadian-owned. Yeah, I have no problem with left slant.

[–] grte 3 points 2 years ago

I was also surprised when I found out. The Thomson's bought them out in 2008 so it's not Canadian since forever or anything, though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

CTV news is honestly one of the most bias free and accurate sources. It sort of surprised me to find this out, as they don't get a lot of attention nationally. I base that statement on https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ctv-news/ as well as my own experiences.

[–] lightrush 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I know that everyone has their own lens but looking through mine, I wouldn't call the CBC left-leaning which is why I take MBFC's ratings with a bowl of salt. πŸ˜€

CTV news is honestly one of the most bias free and accurate sources

Except when discussing things related to Bell Canada and their competitors.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Hah yes true, I could see that. For those that don't know Bell owns CTV.

Why does the Competition Bureau have no power in this country?
