Part of the reason it’s as terrible for the environment as it is is because billions are being poured into keeping it running even though it’s not as profitable (or profitable at all) as they want you to believe it is. If the users actually had to pay the cost it takes to train and run these things, nobody (except maybe propaganda mills) would pay it because it would be a wildly expensive ripoff. The corporations and venture capitalists are hoping to get everyone addicted to it before they start squeezing.

If taxes pump the brakes on this shit even faster, all the better.

You can still transition even if you don’t take hormones! There’s no rule that all trans people have to be or stay on hormones their entire life. Some people will stay on HRT a while and then stop because they’re satisfied with the changes that happened and don’t want more, or they can’t continue HRT for health reasons, etc.

I’m sure it depends to an extent on the buildings, I can’t say how they do it in super ritzy buildings. But when I lived in a lower middle class/working class neighborhood all the apartment buildings just had a row of buzzers at the building entrance with each apartment number on them, and each apartment had a speaker inside it that may or may not work to talk to whoever’s down there, and you go down to pick up your stuff. If you’re really unlucky they can’t hear you reply at all (either from street noise or one of the speakers not working) and you have to race down however many flights of stairs to meet them.

Edit: oh, I forgot you could also buzz them in, but they usually wouldn’t come up the stairs.

NYC encompasses 5 boroughs with varying levels of walkability and transit even within the same borough. Especially in winter, when not all property/business owners de-ice sidewalks like they’re supposed to.

I mean, yeah, some disabled people do make a lot of money or have upper middle class family who won’t miss the ordering out money. And if you’re disabled and on SNAP you can be eligible for them to go towards hot meals (ie, restaurant meals and hot prepared foods) rather than only groceries.

They still existed before you thought about them, they just either used local delivery through the restaurant instead of Doordash or relied on someone else to prepare food for them.

3%? Good god, they’ve even lost a bit of the Lizardman constant.

I would say it’s improved, but still not good. They’re ramping up frequency of service for some lines and adding new lines, but it’s been improvements by inches when we’re miles behind.

That said, the price is good ($1.75) and the accommodations for disabled riders blows anything else I’ve seen out of the water. I see a lot more people with mobility devices on Metro here than I have anywhere else I’ve lived.

It annoys me on social media, and I wouldn’t know how to react if someone did that in front of me. If I wanted to see what the slop machine slopped out I’d go slop-raking myself.

I don’t know how to explain it, but all fake linocut/woodblock print images are kind of samey in a way that sticks out when you see it, compared to linocut/woodblock prints by artists.

It’s almost always this same background color/texture in generated images too, whereas with real prints you might have paper that looks very different even if it’s that exact color. And plenty of artists go wild with the paper and ink colors.

It’s not just one thing, it’s a lot of little things that give it a bad vibe.

No, it sounds like a mindless statistics machine because that’s what it is. Even stupid people have reasons for saying and doing things.

This is on Safari and iOS, I tried restarting my phone and browser to see if it was anything weird on my end, but it’s still happening.

Not a huge problem obviously, it’s just a little tedious to keep deleting it before typing a reply.

Anyone else read this? It’s an ongoing comic (<200 pages currently) set in the moderately distant future, post (multiple) alien contact, people living in space, genetic mods are common, that sort of thing. The protagonist is an alien centaur that was fostered by humans and has never lived around her own species, and it follows her and her friends’ encounters with a ship’s AI pilot of questionable origin trying to get help repairing itself.

I’ve been following the artist for a while as they developed this, first on Twitter before it went bad and later on Bluesky (they’re also on Mastodon). They’ve been doing a lot of fun speculative biology and world building for it, and I’m also really into the art style and character design.

If you’re interested in the world building aspect of it (I think it’s really neat!) you can check out the worldbuilding directory they put together, with info about each species, planets, etc.

I’m not totally sure if this is a Piefed issue or a Blahaj server issue, so sorry if it’s the wrong spot for this.

I’ve noticed that when I try to search for things, the results I get aren’t as expected. If I don’t select to search a community, post, or comment, I get nothing. Searching for posts or comments also pretty frequently gets me nothing.

Random example: just searching ‘signal’ gets me nothing on both posts and comments, along with nothing if I select nothing. But if I search under communities it gives me a community that is already federated and has threads and comments about Signal.

Building on the popularity of the seasonal $15 Summer Day Pass promotion, first introduced in 2022, Metrolink will now offer a year-round $15 weekday fare option, called the SoCal Day Pass, which provides unlimited rides on the day of purchase. On Saturdays and Sundays, the price of the SoCal Day Pass will drop to $10 to match the current weekend rate. Up to three kids ages 17 and under will continue to ride free with a fare-paying adult on weekends.

Metrolink is also introducing a new $5 L.A. Zone Day Pass, available seven days a week, that is good for unlimited single-day travel between eight select stations in and around Downtown Los Angeles, including LA Union Station, Cal State LA, Commerce, Montebello/Commerce, Glendale, Burbank-Downtown and both stations serving the Hollywood Burbank Airport.

I hope these new fares stick, I’m definitely going to be taking advantage and going some places I haven’t been before because the train ticket price felt too much for what was essentially a whim.

When we got to the top of the cemetery, we stopped there and they took off their vests because that's where they have the camera," he said. "Then they pulled me out of the car and kicked me."

Reyes says that after repeatedly asking them to check his wallet, one of the officers finally did so. They realized he did, in fact, have his green card, but questioned whether it was real.

"'I don't know, maybe it's fake' … The other guy says, 'No, it's real' … That's when they finally stopped," he said. "They were planning to keep hitting me because they didn't have good intentions. They took me to a cemetery."

Even so, the threats continued.

"Do you think you're a big shot just because you have a green card? I'll make sure they revoke that green card of yours," Reyes said, recalling what agents told him. "'I'm going to do everything I can to get this paper revoked,' an immigration officer told me."
