I'm interested in leftist opinions of employee-owned companies. If that's still too broad, could you give some examples of employees buying their employer out? Or are there other ways, like with a union?

Also, what's up with King Arthur's and Bob's Red Mill?

. . . just "Lemmy?" "Lem?" Something else entirely?

Another possibility could be "Stan" or "Stanislaw" (because of Stanisław Lem).

Lemmy of Motörhead's real name is "Ian Fraser Kilmister," so our guy could also be named "Ian" or "Kilmister;" Fraser probably not being a great choice for obvious reasons.

(Have I spent way too much time thinking about this? Is it way past time for me to stop drinking coffee and go to bed? You bet! ☕🤪)

For me it would be a full copy of wikipedia, an offline copy of some maps of where I live, some linux ISO's, and a lot of entertainment media.

My personal one was the shining. I ended up watching it over 20 times before I was 12.

I'm spending a lot of time babysitting my nieces (9 & 11). I'm cis male and I would love to hear what women would answer or suggest for me to show them in a cool uncle role.

I'm a big advocate for data privacy and I left Facebook many years ago without feeling the need to go back. However, there's several local groups and a couple of local businesses that specifically communicate via Facebook that I'd like to interact with.

This presents a problem - I have to use the platform to interact with these people but I don't want to use the platform. So how do I keep my data safe from Zucks greedy hands? So far I'm thinking:

  • use a throwaway email or email that is specifically for fb
  • only access via Firefox inprivate browser and use addons to clean cookies after every session
  • utilise ad blockers in said browser
  • set fb privacy settings accordingly to opt out of ad personalisation, othrr site fb logins etc
  • potentially only access via VPN but that might be cumbersome
  • maybe do all of this via android work profile but not sure if that's much benefit

Anything else I can do to remain reasonably safe?

Let's say there is a tulip lovers club, where they talk about tulips, their variations and how to grow them. Let's say someone new joins the club, this new person starts saying that tulips are rubbish and that roses are better or something like that. This person becomes so insistent with these statements that they end up being kicked out of the club. Before leaving, the person calls the club an "Echo Chamber" about tulips.

Would this person be right?

I guess that goes for eyebrows and other body hair in general, but it seems like hair loss with age is very specifically only on top of the head and nowhere else.

My favourite part of modern history is the cold war, my country of choice would be the U.S.S.R

My reasons are simple:

  • They sent the first man into space and sent Sputnik which sent the USA into a space chasing frenzy that made moon discovery possible.

  • Their flag, whilst simple like the PRC, is iconic in both memes but also infamy amongst Eastern European people as a sign of the historical power they wielded over half of Europe. I also just think it's look cool.

  • Some of their structure sort of lives on in the modern era such as the PRC's Politburo basically being a chinese version of the soviet one

  • I quite like a lot of the military hardware they made like the T 72 which is my favourite tank.

  • The soviets are responsible for Tetris!!!

What is your favourite historical country? It can be ancient, medieval, colonial era or cold war era etc.

Have a good day/night!

This is for people who went to an English-speaking school not knowing English and their experiences, whether it was because you were never taught to speak English, were learning it but not yet fluent, or because you moved from another country.

It appears to work fine (it contains my home partition for my main machine I daily drive) and I haven't noticed signs of failure. Not noticeably slow either. I used to boot Windows off of it once upon a time which was incredibly slow to start up, but I haven't noticed slowness since using it for my home partition for my personal files.

Articles online seem to suggest the life expectancy for an HDD is 5–7 years. Should I be worried? How do I know when to get a new drive?

It's hard to characterize in a single sentence, so I'll just break it down into its constituent parts.

The Beep

When the laundry cycle finishes it does the following:

  • It beeps super loudly for 5 seconds
  • If you don't run to switch it off, it will wait 30 more seconds and then continue to beep super loudly for 5 seconds
  • If you switch it off whilst it's beeping, it will continue to finish its beeping
  • There is no volume setting nor any way to switch this off.

The Door

When it's finished. It does not release. That beeping sound from earlier to tell you to come get your laundry? No no no, that was just the "come and watch me drain" alarm.

  • Switching it off has no effect on the door release.
  • It releases whenever it wants. It could be 5 minutes, it could be 20.
  • When it does release, all you will get is a sound, so you better be around to hear it.
  • If you miss this sound, it will lock itself again 10-15 minutes later and rotate your clothes.
  • It will then repeat the release process.

I moved to a really cold and dry climate which has made my cheeks light up like a christmas tree. I've always lived in humid cities so this isn't something I've had to think about.

Anyone have suggestions on reasonably priced moisturizers that could help out? I checked out Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, but at $60+, I'd like to check if any comparable alternatives exist at a lower cost.

My wife and I are constantly struggle with our remotes.

For whatever reason the AAA batteries in our remotes die within a month of replacing them. I got fed up with it, so we eventually switched from a Google TV to an Apple TV.

However, the Apple TV remote will not control our TV’s volume or power.

I have found a few different apps on the iOS App Store that are either not compatible or want us to spend 40 dollars annually for a universal remote.

I’m not opposed to spending 5-25 for an app, but IAP subscription for 40 annually is too rich for me.

Do you have any suggestions?

This is the app my wife prefers, but the free trial expires tomorrow.

Most of my original subs come from .world so I don’t know what’s worth following on .ml, lemmygrad, hexbear, etc.

Maybe I could even extend this question to what communities in non major instances are worth subing too.

Ok, here's the thing: Earlier this week I had the idea of setting up a Lemmy community focused on Lowpoly modeling done with PicoCad, Blockbench and Blender. I went with my Mastodon instance looking for feedback on community regulations. Then the admin of my instance contacted me to tell me if he wanted me to set up a whole Lemmy instance.

He told me it was something he had been thinking about for a while. He already has several projects in the fediverse: two Mastodon instances (TKZ.one and Mas.lat), one on Pixelfed (Pixelfed.es), one on Peertube (TKZ.video), etc. It's just that, as I wasn't familiar with Lemmy, I didn't know where to start, and as I'm one of the only ones in the instance that is active on Lemmy....

Lemmy is the second page, after Mastodon, where I've been messing around the most and I'm close to a year around here (it's not much, but it's something), so I'm pretty familiar.

The instance is already set up (Lem.to). At the moment it has nothing, since we just finished making it today. It will be focused on the Spanish-speaking public, although I don't rule out the possibility of bilingual communities (Spanish and English), although that remains to be seen.

So, I am asking for help to know how to get off to a good start in this new responsibility. I would like to do the best job possible and attract more users to Lemmy if possible. Any advice is welcome.

Artificial Superintelligence, AI systems that are more intelligent than humans across every domain, may or may not be coming soon

What could we do to prepare now for a future where it has arrived?

I have been considering:

  • starting local community groups
  • updating my investment strategies to be more resilient to market disruption
  • diversifying personal income streams
  • staying up to date with the latest news and learn to better use the latest tools/technology
  • upgrading personal skills towards the harder to replace industries

It's a bit difficult to imagine a truly "safe" way of life. Barring UBI and more progressive taxes it seems like it may be quite challenging for the average person to exist comfortably.

Some industries that are already impacted at the level of technology we already have

  • programming
  • ui design
  • creative writing
  • technical writing
  • customer support
  • graphic art
  • data analysis

I think almost every other industry is at risk of significant disruption. A capitalism based society will always stray toward the cheapest option, "if AI can take customer support calls for $1/day and customer satisfaction doesn't dip, why would I pay a person $150/day?"
