It actually started from an acedemic study about wolves from way back. But then when that was falsified it became a furry thing lol
Yeah, they do. Check out how younger male lions become 'kings', younger male gorillas become head of the family, younger male chimps become head of the family, younger stallions become head of the herd, erc etc etc.
ya it's not like being the "alpha" is a life long one times fight sort of thing
