ICQ was a key part of my realization that most people are lazy, short-sighted, idiots.

Everyone I knew wanted to use AIM. ICQ had better features (offline messaging, style overrides, you could change your name without changing your account, file transfers worked better, etc etc). But no one cared.

It's like how people won't get off facebook or reddit. Sometimes you have to have a little inconvenience for the greater long term benefit.

I eventually moved to Trillian because then it didn't matter if they used ICQ, AIM, or MSN; I could use 1 thing and talk to everyone, while still having all the better features on my end.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Trillian! Hadn't thought of that in forever.

I heard that in my bones...

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Icq was the shit!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I still remember my ID but I've forgotten the password and lost access to the email. Loved ICQ.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I forget a password I created yesterday but I remember that 7 digit number as if my life depended on it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

This 8 digit peasant acknowledges the even more advanced age of my 7 digit elder. o7

Thanks to MSN Messenger for making me develop touch typing skills.

One of my friends' notification tone is the "uh oh"

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I can still hear the MSN message sound in my head

And the original Steam chat sound

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you rummage through the steam folder, the old sound is still there!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Really? How do I find it? Search for wav files or something?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

StarCraft. Learn to type really quickly when you're coordinating a massive assault or calling for reinforcements.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Something this generation of kids will sadly never experience?

Unreal Tournament

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Oh man, still my favourite FPS of all time. Titanfall 2 comes close but nothing will beat Unreal Tournament.

KILLING SPREE

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

hey, it's been released for free! they can still get into it.

although i'm more partial to 2004.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

WinMX. That is something I didn’t hear in a long time.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

MS COMIC CHAT MOTHERFUCKER! DO YOU USE IT?!

Also, what's your icq number?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Comic Chat was awesome. I miss it. Along with chatrooms in general.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

they've never heard of usenet (from 1980) which is still active.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was laughing early thinking this was depicting the future, where the "funny old man gibberish" was the Roblox "oof!" because a Zoomer was getting punched lmao.

For a sec it felt like a deep commentary on how the flow of time is always cruel. BUT ANYWAY more on topic:

I both miss the Yahoo! Messenger days and also feel incredibly weirded out knowing how like, nothing was encrypted back then. That's something I simply can't imagine not caring about now. :|

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Anyone remember the Yahoo fight rooms?
