TF, this guy is still getting millions of views on TikTok and Twitter.

Can we just burn engagement-driven social media? Please?

[–] [email protected] 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It just doesn't make logical sense. The most "successful" social media accounts are always the shittiest. You'd think it would completely devalue what a "view" is worth, but I guess eyeballs are eyeballs. Then the whole click farm situation where you just buy engagement. A secondary market that just reminds you of the Ouroboro.

I think I'm missing something because somehow half of tech is funded by it.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 4 days ago (2 children)

You're not missing anything. You got it right. The entire funding model for tech is destined for a financial collapse that will make 2008 look like child's play.

https://www.fsgoriginals.com/books/subprime-attention-crisis

From the unreliability of advertising numbers and the unregulated automation of advertising bidding wars, to the simple fact that online ads mostly fail to work, Hwang demonstrates that while consumers’ attention has never been more prized, the true value of that attention itself—much like subprime mortgages—is wildly misrepresented. And if online advertising goes belly-up, the internet—and its free services—will suddenly be accessible only to those who can afford it.

It’s great for pushing enraging content though. I feel like the content itself has gravely affected the collective psyche, and so have influencer endorsements (which companies pay big bucks for), even if the explicit ads have not.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Influencer endorsements can actually be even less effective than traditional ads, despite their outsized budgets.

The industry has also been expressing concerns about the validity of social media ‘vanity’ measures, documenting that engagement for most social media platforms and for collaborations with influencers can be very low (Influencer Marketing, 2020)

It destroys real relationships, replaces them with para social ones, then exploits them for money. It's not just attention that is monetized. It's human connection.

Also for porn: onlyfans is successful because you can pay for personalized actions and one can build something appearing like a relationship with the porn star. Before one would just passively watch them.

It’s still so one-way though.

I guess what’s remarkable is the collective unawareness of how artificial those relationships are. I get it, I know IRL loneliness and went down the engagement rabbit hole too.

But still, it’s remarkable. I still see articles from professional journalists, all the time, wondering what’s happening to relationships or democracy or whatever then end their post with something akin to a “like and subscribe!” and a busy Twitter profile.

God, I hope that comes soon. Like, tomorrow soon

[–] [email protected] 73 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Let me guess...everyone already bought their tickets?

[–] [email protected] 36 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Honestly I hope so. Imagine those tickets going up, you thinking "oh fyre festival, what's that? That sounds fun" then looking it up, then buying tickets.

Anyone that wants to go be around that deserves to get got. Zero sympathy.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 4 days ago (1 children)

At this point, I expect most tickets holder are influencers trying to cash in on a reaction video.

It's like influencers entering a train about to crash because they know people can't look away from a train wreck and thus they'll get views.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

This is why, as mentioned above:

The most "successful" social media accounts are always the shittiest.

It's just like that Morcheeba song, everybody loves a loser.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 4 days ago (2 children)

The sequel is set to take place on Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo, Mexico, with tickets going for $1,400 and up to $1.1m. When speaking about the highest-priced package, McFarland has said: “You will be on a boat, have the luxury yachts that we partner with who will be docked and parked outside the island.”

A minimum of $500,000 will go towards the money still owed by McFarland, estimated to be close to $26m.

Amazing to me that anybody would spend real money on anything this fraudster promotes.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

i wonder if the guy that was going to give a BJ to an investor is part of this one too.

[–] Frog 5 points 3 days ago

I bet nearly all the million dollar tickets will be given to infuencers to promote the event. They don't actually have any value.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Looks like this time they didn't have that guy willing to suck dick for water LOL

I love that documentary.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

After

"Hey, didn't you want this water?"

Oh, right...yeah, water.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 4 days ago

I can't see a way for this to be anything but a Producers situation. Calling it literally anything but Fyre Festival 2 would increase the odds of success, if the event succeeding was ever the plan.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 35 points 4 days ago

oh come on. you're all just haters. why can't i spend 300,000 dollars of my own hard-inherited money to go and enjoy a few unforgettable days in a tropical paradise? you might laugh, but i'll be just as uncomfortable and powerless as you are for a little while. don't you think that's worth a few minutes of my dad's earnings?

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I honestly had to look up what Fyre festvial is. Never heard of it, but

Fyre Festival was a fraudulent luxury music festival organized by American businessman Billy McFarland and American rapper Ja Rule. It was originally created to promote the company's Fyre app for booking music talent.

Sounds like a real loss, that.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Have you not seen the documentary??

It's worth a punt.

It's like a big shan on to all the dickheads that section of that industry attracts

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Ah I guess that's another one for my to-watch-list!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Both documentaries were good. Love it

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

In short, it was one of the most spectacular disasters in the history of music festivals. The advertising showed that even the cheapest tickets would get some fancy rooms. Sold out quickly, but all the money was nowhere near enough to even pay for the stage + performers. The island didn't have housing and they "improvised" some tents for the attendees (they used relief tents like those you see in displaced populations). No food, no water, no bathrooms.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

So now there's supposedly a second festival, of the same name, and am I getting this right, organized by the same dude who was already convicted? And Mexico is saying they have no knowledge of any such event?

I guess they bet on people being idiots - falling for it a second time - and it seems they were right.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 days ago

Who could have possibly predicted this. I'm shocked.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago

Damn...

Was hoping to watch the Internet Historian video on this one too...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

new internet historian video soon I bet

[–] [email protected] 20 points 4 days ago

Can't wait to see who he plagiarizes this time!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah, fuck that guy if you really pay attention, he is practically alt right adjacent. If you know the correct dog whistles to look for …also the plagiarism was fucking atrocious and I can’t enjoy anything he does because he’s a fucking liar and he didn’t even take ownership of what he did. If you want to know more and have spare time, I would suggest you watch this Video it has chapters so you can find him easily

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

There’s no internet historian in the chapters, which one is it?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I’m sorry I thought there was, it’s the chapter marked cave story, which is tragic because that was a good one or until it wasn’t , before I realized it was ripped from a blog post Word for Word

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Did you watch the video or the segment at least?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh no. I was so hyped for this new season...

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The 1st season was so good. Bologna sandwiches at a luxury event, FEMA tents blowing over, inadequate sanitation and dudes sucking dick for bottled water. There is no way fyre 2 can top that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Wasn't Fyre Festival 2 just the MrBeast Experience?
