Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try [email protected] or [email protected]
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Johnny Five, alive!
No disassemble!
I have wanted to rewatch these films, but I’m concerned that they might not have aged very well.
The movie starring a white guy in brown face faking an Indian accent? Probably not
Yeah…
When I rewatched it, I was standing here beside myself.
You could also watch Chappie, which is essentially the same concept but darker and more South African.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll do that instead.
They haven't. I saw Short Circuit 2 this year again and it's really unfortunate how much the appalling racism sullied an otherwise charming film. It was especially dear to me as a kid because there was a Johnny 5 animatronic at my science museum, and it encouraged in me a lot of hope for the future. I miss having that optimism.
Last time I saw that movie was at a drive in. No joke.
Last time I saw any movie outside of my house was at a drive in. My city still has one, and I prefer it to the indoor movie theater.
Admittedly, that was several years ago (probably even pre-covid), but that's not the drive-in's fault; that's because all the movies these days are shitty sequels, prequels, remakes, and live-action versions of perfectly-good animated films.
I can hear that title in an Indian accent
I completely forgot about that character, but I also read this in an Indian accent and didn't even realize I had until I read your comment.
Me whenever I look at my dogs: "Beautiful animal... canine... dog... mutt."
