TranscriptAn email with the subject "Tic Tok Trend". It says:

Students and Parents,

We are aware of the Tik Tok trend involving students inserting small metal objects (such as paper clips, pushpins, pencil lead, etc.) into the charging ports of their Chromebooks. This can result in creating sparks, electrical fires, and/or battery punctures, all of which can cause serious injury and damage.

After this message, if a student chooses to participate in this inappropriate behavior, the student may be charged the replacement fee for a new Chromebook. Additionally, the student will face disciplinary action in the form of out of school suspension (OSS).

We are asking for your support in speaking with your child about the dangers of this behavior, as well as reinforcing the importance of treating school-issued devices with care.

A purple button at the bottom says “View, Appreciate or Reply”, and a note underneath states “Please do not reply to this email.”

Guess that happens if you are forced to use a Chromebook

Oh man. I read "students are inserting small metal objects..." And totally expected it to continue with "...into their urethras in a trend called 'sounding.'"

Ok good I wasn't the only one who jumped to this

i think most people were expecting a meat orifice instead of a computer orifice

You don't need TikTok to do dumb shit, but I can see how it can be an inspiration. However, people have been poking things into holes since the dawn of time. And I don't mean sexually, although that's also true, but it belongs on another instance.

Back in the days of dumb switches, a bored colleague managed to take down the network in the whole building. While in a meeting, he played around with an Ethernet patch cable and inserted it in two adjacent network ports on the table, thus creating a loop. Good times.

Well, apparently, my school has disabled STP for some reason. So it's still a possibility.

Hey I did that when I was in elementary school. Was bored playing around and unplugged the ethernet cable from the back of the computer and plugged it into an open port on the wall. ~~Queue~~ Cue the whole network going down and me pretending I had no idea how that happened. We ended up getting a talk about not playing with the wires once someone figured out what happened 😅 never figured out it was me tho haha

btw, you wanted cue not queue, as in cue cards, that's my cue, cue the music.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

At least they didn’t use que

I do occasionally queue the music, however.

Thanks fixed!

Haha good for you! Our guy got the nickname Loopmaster for a couple of weeks. 😁

Nowadays the proper network switches used commercially can tell there's a loop and isolate the ports until the loop is gone. Another loophole closed (pun very much intended).

If they turn it on spanning tree, it's not always default on.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago

As far as nicknames go that one ain't bad!

I remember thinking it was stupid that I could cause something like that, I chalked it up to my school's IT infrastructure just being bad (rural Ontario) lol glad to know it doesn't mess things up now, never tried it again after that!

I feel like tiktok has accellerated it slightly, though tiktok is something people love to hate.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

If it weren't tiktok it'd be any other mainstream social media that people spread dumb trends on. Anybody remember teenagers eating laundry soap pods a couple years ago?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Yep, and people would be talking about it like they talk about tiktok.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I could never tell if that was actually a thing, or just a meme, and that's when I knew I was now one of the olds.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 20 hours ago

It was a meme

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

It was a meme, but older boomers started doing it. I don't know if was related to the trend or if they just looked appetizing, but the real issue was dementia.

I remember a kid in our class grabbed a fork from lunch, then proceeded to wrap his hand with a sweatshirt when we’re in class and then stabbed the outlet causing our room and a couple of classrooms to loose power. I think they thought it just happened randomly since the sub didn’t notice plus the lights went off so you couldn’t see him stabbing the outlet. Our class got yelled at for being too loud since they were screaming when the lights went off, but the kid that did that never got caught.
