New to this, starting to understand how it works sort of. I am looking for a place to chat to people, are live text chat room communities a thing here? Or do people chat through comments on posts? Not quite understanding that aspect yet.

We use SimpleX chat. It isn't as popular as Matrix but the security is better and we run into fewer traffickers there than on Matrix.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks, does it have a decent variety of groups?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It does but not all of them are out in the open to discover. Part of how SXC works is based around not being discoverable if you don't want to be.

There is an official directory with quite a few rooms and some unofficial ones for things that aren't allowed on the main directory for whatever reason. I would say the overall size is much smaller than even Matrix but there are some pretty large and active rooms that cover a fair bit of tech and general topics. It's not perfect but I prefer it to Matrix.

Thanks for the suggestion, it’s the tech stuff I’m trying to avoid , seems like ever room on matrix is heavily to lightly related to tech. Which is over my head mostly. I m just looking for a semi constant stream of decent chats or personalities.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

There's plenty of stuff that isn't tech there but I don't use it much for general browsing and chat. We host rooms on SXC for some of our communities and the instance itself as a means of communication off Lemmy. Most of my time is spent in those rooms interacting with people I've met on Lemmy or random people who find our rooms on SXC lol.

You can message people

The "how" depends on your client

Mostly we just shitpost at each other, but every once in a while we’ve been known to have intelligent conversation.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Haha, I’ve seen this word a lot, please define shitpost for me, it is pretty self explanatory but is there an official meaning for it?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

It's posting dumb and usually low effort memes or jokes that aren't meant to be taken too seriously.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

I'm just here to post my fucked-up "performance art" and have a laugh

Maybe two years ago, not anymore

No live chat, there is Matrix for that. There is [email protected] if you want to chat with people via comments.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ok I see, so what we are doing now is basically what Lemmy is about. Someone makes a post about a subject and people comment on the main post or reply to someone else’s comment on the main post. Is that about it or is there more to it?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That's about it. That is the core of digg and Reddit Lemmy is doing.

I found no value is live threads, Reddit live, or Reddit chat so I am happy this aren't here.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

Got it, thank you for the answer

It's kinda like discord. But you can run it on your own hardware. Self hosted as we call it. https://matrix.org/

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ok, I’m not that technical but I’ll do some reading.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You don’t have to run it yourself, you can just create an account on an existing server of your choosing, just like Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Aha! This is useful information I appreciate it

I find it analogous to IRC - Many servers connected together with shared users and chat rooms.

I use the Element app on android, and https://app.element.io/ on PC

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Gonna be that guy and mention an alternative - Schildi Chat available for web, desktop and Android. Its based on the Element apps but with some extras. For example if you use the 'Next' variant of the Android app, Spaces work as intended.

That reminds me that I was going to set up an "official" CasualConversations matrix chat, but then completely forgot.

Thanks I will check these out

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 days ago (2 children)

speaking of..... anyone hear from Nicole recently?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago

She left us and took the kids.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

Last I heard from her was back around the beginning of April.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

There's conversations in posts and sometimes messages, but if you're looking for live federated chat, you might want to check out Matrix over something like Lemmy or Mbin, which are more forum-like.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You want Matrix if you want fediverse live chat.

A "live" conversation can happen here (or any forum, really), but it's not super common.
