If the drink cloaca is unholy, call me a heathen.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I’ll take the cloaca one every time. They got damn fine choices.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

In my experience, the flavors are not the same, not calibrated correctly or something.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 26 minutes ago

Selects regular Dr. Pepper.

Received a cup of seltzer water with a drop of syrup.

[–] [email protected] 46 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

It's not a "cloaca dispenser", it doesn't dispense cloacas. It is a "soda cloaca", it has all sodas coming out the same hole.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Can I get one of them Cloaca-Colas

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 hours ago
[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 hours ago

Maybe in the next FallOut game

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I used to be happy to see these because I knew I'd have more than one option that wasn't carbonated. Many places usually have 1, which is either fake lemonade with artificial sweetener, fruit punch (0% juice), or Orange High-C. Which I'm glad they don't claim is juice, because it's just delicious sugar water.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 hours ago

I'm happy to see them because I get more sugar free choices than water or diet cola.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Babe can I get one of them Cloaca-Colas

[–] [email protected] 23 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

FYI, those machines are rarely cleaned.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

FR, the lines on the top machine get hooked up to a metering pump whose intakes are

A. Bag of "Soda" syrup which comes in a box

B. Air Tank of Carbonation

C. Water

The outlet hoses themselves are transparent so a lot of serious issues would be noticed and rectified, but in general stores don't implement proper protocol to clean or change them out regularly. There is actually a couple of bacterial strains found almost exclusively in the lines, I've had the priviledge to examine them in person. They're rarely very harmful but it's kind of neat.

The actual machine people see usually only houses the refrigeration unit with the pumps and bags and tank on the other side of a wall or hidden under a counter.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

i like to think the soda dispenser bacteria enhances my biological profile

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Your immune system is going to hate it but your gut biome is going to love it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

... is that the reason some places drinks taste different?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 hours ago

That's usually because the syrup to carbonated water ratio is different. But yeah I'm sure if you never clean the lines it won't be as good. (Or if you have some weirdness where people are swapping the soda lines. Should be rare though, as you don't want to swap which one says coke/sprite/w.e on the other end

[–] [email protected] 59 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

For the bottom machine, run the faucet for a few seconds before you put your cup under it. Last thing anyone wants is half-watered down cherry coke or homeopathic fanta.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 16 hours ago

Homeopathic Fanta lol, I'm gonna use this in the future

[–] [email protected] 31 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Those vending machines have facial recognition cameras on them.

OK so not the one from the picture then.

Edit: yeah, no camera. So the new one has a camera, but the old one, the one from the meme, does not. I’ve never seen the new one, have seen plenty of the old one.

Interesting.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (4 children)

Yeah, says so right there in the brochure. "Video capability" AND it's got bluetooth, which is a famously promiscuous protocol so if you're anywhere near one of these things with BT enabled on your fone it's fucking in your BT, seeing your status

edit: I bet it can even tag me driving by listening to Spotify on my earbuds. I can get a lot further from my phone than I'd be from the drink machine in who knows how many fast food spots before service drops.

That's actually pretty terrifying now that I think about it and I've long been a fan of BT earbuds but damn, these drink machines and any number of unknown nodes could just be watching me drive around

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone with a spectrum analyzer can see people using their earbuds, they can't deduce any useful information from that. Several analyzers? Yea, can triangulate signals, so what. They still can't know for sure who they belong to, since BT doesn't transmit identifying info unless you're pairing (aka discoverable), and even then it can be randomized.

Also I posted in in a different comment but I'll leave this here too.

I can get a lot further from my phone than I'd be from the drink machine in who knows how many fast food spots before service drops.

A typical fast food restaurant has dozens, if not hundreds of wifi and bt devices. Nothing surprising when your phone has to fight to get loud enough for your buds.

From a quick search, bluetooth classic has 79 channels, and if there's 2.4Ghz Wifi in use, it has 14 in damn near the same frequency range.

If you're worried about tracking - there are far easier ways to do that than hope your BT devices are discoverable and then try and match the (possibly randomized) device IDs to you.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

Good points, thanks

[–] AnAverageSnoot 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That's.. not how Bluetooth works.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 hours ago

Depends on the device, there was a story recently of a Nissan infotainment system that was perma-pairing as long as you had the options screen open afaik. If your earbuds are pairing close by, as is the machine - you can probably make some rudimentary motion tracking. Gonna be inaccurate as hell though, and it relies on both devices permanently being in pairing mode.

I can get a lot further from my phone than I'd be from the drink machine in who knows how many fast food spots before service drops.

This part though is way easier to explain with interference. A typical fast food restaurant has dozens, if not hundreds of wifi and bt devices. Nothing surprising when your phone has to fight to get loud enough for your buds.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago

That isn’t the one from the picture and I’ve never seen one of those in the wild. Not that they don’t exist, but the comment I replied to said “those” referring to the one in the image, which clearly doesn’t have a pinhole camera.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Not sure about that, but I did see numerous new Coca-Cola products in new flavors that I assume they put together by scraping metrics from these; and if I remember correctly they do have cellular interface.

Just pick your poison and dispense for like 1 second into the tray. Yes it's wasteful, but that's their fault for making you have to flush the tube.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

No flavor customization options ❌

At least 6 flavor shots available to add to the base flavor ✅

[–] [email protected] 20 points 17 hours ago

Yo dawg, I heard you like sugar so I put sugar in your sugar.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Six flavor shots that mix with all the others and end up just tasting like a combination of them all. 😷

[–] [email protected] 15 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (3 children)

Actually its like crazy precise tube delivery some guy made a fortune engineering it 👍 So that exact doesn't happen

Surgical machines use it now it was revolutionary at the time

Peter Dorneys patents focus on various aspects of beverage dispensing, including the efficiency and accuracy of drink preparation. His innovations have paved the way for automated systems that can mix and dispense beverages with precision, which is crucial in both commercial and medical applications. https://patents.google.com/patent/US8127805B2/en

[–] [email protected] 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

My bad. But why does it taste like shit then?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 15 hours ago

Because its just boxes of syrups that come through dirty hoses no one cleans from a closet in the back that's filled with roaches. Also depends if someone swaps the syrup box to a new box when it runs out or it just tastes like soda water

[–] [email protected] 4 points 16 hours ago

Bullshit it always tastes like it has vanilla in it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago

Yeah but the people at the theatre don't replace the concentrate pouches when they are running low so you still end up with diluted garbage that is mostly just plain soda water

[–] [email protected] 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

How am I supposed to mix with this one?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Same as with any other? You pick one flavour first, and then another.

Many of them even let you choose one to mix with when you choose a flavour.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 hours ago

I always mix Coke, Fanta, Fanta exotic and Sprite. Really delicious. Here in Sweden you pour yourself in some restaurants.
