Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online

If you keep running that'd be a hobby in itself.
A hobby is usually something you enjoy.
I love to gate keep! But it's not going well.
It’s still there so I’d call that a success.
Piracy!
Ahoy, matey!
Math, programming, having nightmares.
Ah, so you have one hobby?
Drawing.
Also spending days rearranging files into more sophisticated structures, finally noticing that it's becoming horribly convoluted enough to be unmaintainable, and tearing the structure down again.
I'm a terrible drummer and worse producer, and I like to play games.
Reading, creative and technical writing, tabletop gaming, miniature / fine art painting, photography, listening to and writing music (dungeon synth, extreme metal, folk, electronica), hiking, cinema
I am a self-taught juggler. I taught myself at the age of six

I do have Adhd and no money, as you can imagine

I study biochem/microbiology. Recently there's been a new(?) discovery about photoresperation actually being benificial to the plant. Photo respiration is when photosynthesis accidentally happens to an oxygen which creates toxic molecules and was always thought of as wasteful. Billions of dollars have been spent to 'solve' this problem when, unsurprisingly, billions of years of evolution have solved it already.
IMO it's why plants don't do as well as we expect with high CO² concentrations (iirc)... the paper is behind a pay wall though, so I haven't read the whole thing yet but the mechanism has unfortunately been called the Bloom Cycle and is set to confuse countless undergrads in the future.
reading literature, history, and academic stuff. I have been reading several books about the creation of the MFA programs in the USA, for example. i also like studying languages and have studied 7. i also dig fountain pens and fancy pencils and stationary, makes writing and note taking a very enjoyable experience.
Mountain biking/cycling. I also do advocacy and education and trail building for this and have CPR/first aid wilderness certs I have to re-up every couple of years. hiking and camping too.
I also am into gaming, cooking, and DIY projects but that is touch and go depending on the season or other stuff going on. i mostly only game when it's winter or I'm injured/sick. I also love training my pets. My dog and I have done several training programs and my cat is basically a well-trained dog.
usually people think at least one of my hobbies is some social faux pas when they find out about it.
- Automobile repair
- Magic the Gathering
- Model trains
Gaming, weight training, reading, nail painting, just getting started on lock picking.
Gardening on my roof. Herbs, veggies, flowers, even trees.
Cooking, baking, home canning! Gardening when it's the season! Knitting when I remember!
I have a comic that I work on when I have the time and energy for. If not some random doodles or drawing maps and sometime NPCs amongst my prep for my dnd game. Some times I play videogames too but I find it hard to really sink into it the way I did when I was a kid.

Is Gear Acquisition Syndrome a hobby? Lol

- Magic: The Gathering
- TTRPGs (D&D 5e, Shadowrun 6e, Midgard 5e)
Lately of a poem-writing spree, with words toying, feeling very free, I've been enjoying greatly.
- I read a lot, mostly fantasy, science fiction, and mysteries, plus some non-fiction.
- I play and run non-computer roleplaying games. I started in 1976 and have been at it ever since.
- I have recently taken up playing the recorder, mostly tenor. My wife and a friend play with me.
Weightlifting, gaming, following politics.
Cooking. Being gigantic means ya boi eats. So why not enjoy what I eat? I never understood the protein shake drinkers.
Some people don't mind bland food or eating the same thing all the time. As someone trying to lose weight, I envy them.
Healthy food doesn't have to bland. One of my favorite things is a spicy red cabbage slaw with lime juice and apple cider vinegar. I'm currently eating carrots with ranch made from Greek yogurt. Denying yourself flavor is not a strategy for long term success.
Gaming, programming, nail painting, 3d printing, and any random bs crafting idea that crosses my field of vision.
Making stuff with my 3D printer and CNC milling machine. And petting cats.
Im not sure I have them anymore. Downtime is to precious so what would be my hobbies at this point are relaxing and enjoying simple things. I mean I don't feel video games or watching media would be hobbies but if you ever saw my responses to what are you playing or watching you will see I don't exactly consume it a lot in a week. which maybe doing it less would make it more of a hobby in that case. I dunno. I do very much try my best to figure out what I can do among my options that interest me the most.
