Reporting Highlights

  • High Hopes: A village in Ohio looked to transform its economy. An ambitious company wanted to transform the way we eat. They came together in hopes of changing their futures.
  • Red Carpet: Although the company, AquaBounty, had never made a profit, public officials rolled out the red carpet — especially the village mayor, who had ties to AquaBounty.
  • Frozen Site: Even with so much public assistance, the project fell apart, and the village that hoped for a transformative industry is carrying the cost.

More than 200 organisations worldwide have called on nations involved in producing F-35 fighter jets to “immediately halt all arms transfers to Israel” amid fears they have failed to prevent the planes from being used to violate international law.

The letter, signed by 232 civil society organisations, was sent on Monday to government ministers in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, the US and the UK as the war in Gaza reached 500 days.

The sponsors hail from the jet-building nations as well as Belgium, Jordan, Lebanon, Switzerland, Ireland, India and elsewhere. High-profile charities and NGOs, such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Oxfam, are among the sponsors.

Hi everyone!

I’m a Playstation gamer looking into moving to Linux gaming as the next Playstation might not be able to play physical games.

Here are my 2 computers:

MacBook Pro 2012 (upgraded) with Fedora 41

Surface Go 1 with Fedora 41

I bought Frostpunk on Steam after checking on Proton DB that it would normally run on the MacBook as I knew the Surface Go would probably be way too weak.

According to Proton DB it’s a Gold game.

In the end, no matter what version of Proton I use, it doesn’t launch on the MacBook. I have a black screen, some icy sounds and then it crashes at best..

I then thought, let’s give it a try on the Surface Go and it launched immediately without any tinkering using Proton experimental.

But, the game crashes when the firat cinematic starts, probably because it’s loading too many assets for the Surface.

If anyone has an idea about what to try too many get it working on the MacBook, I would be thankful.

In the meantime, I would want to know, how do you know if a game is gonna run on your machine?

Tokyo (AFP) – Japan will allow people from Taiwan to list the island as their place of origin in the country's family registry instead of China, a justice ministry official said Tuesday.

When a Japanese citizen marries someone from overseas, the spouse's nationality and name are recorded in the registry system that local governments must maintain by law.

Currently people from Taiwan -- regarded as a region, not a country under a policy in place since 1972 when Tokyo normalised ties with Beijing -- are described as from China.

But "from May, after revisions to ministry rules, a name of a region can be written in the nationality field", a justice ministry official told AFP.

The change follows requests from Taiwanese spouses who want to express their regional identity, he added.

Taiwan's government welcomed the decision, foreign ministry spokesman Hsiao Kuangwei told reporters on Tuesday.

The move will "demonstrate respect for the identity of Taiwanese residents in Japan" and "will also provide greater clarity in identification", he said.

Japan's residence certificates for mid- to long-term foreign residents already allow Taiwanese to describe themselves as being from Taiwan, the Japanese official noted.

"Practical difficulties have also arisen due to discrepancies in the country or region names -- Taiwan on the residence card, and China in the family register," he added.

China regards self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has said it will use force to bring the island under its control if necessary.

It opposes any actions that attempt to confer international legitimacy on Taiwan, which Beijing has sought to erase from the global stage.

"We urge the Japanese side to abide by the one-China principle and the spirit of the... political documents between China and Japan," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters on Monday after Japanese media reported the change.

"No gimmicks on the Taiwan question, and do not send any conflicting or wrong signals," he said.

Japan cut official ties with Taiwan in 1972, stating in a joint communique with Beijing that it understands and respects that "Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China".

However, the country has kept close economic relations with Taiwan, and Taiwanese chip giant TSMC opened a new factory in Japan's Kyushu region last year.

Summary

Confusion surrounds the leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-era entity with increasing federal influence.

Despite Trump's public claims that Elon Musk leads DOGE, a White House affidavit claims that Musk is only a senior adviser with no formal decision-making power.

A federal judge ruled DOGE is an "agency" despite the administration avoiding the label, raising transparency concerns.

Court proceedings have revealed no clear leader, leaving even federal lawyers uncertain about who truly runs DOGE.

Me and my Friend started on Halo Reach today. I know the Screenshot isn't of that, i forgot to get screenshots of that after i got distracted trying to keep track of which Data Pads i needed to get.

After Reach though, I introduced my younger siblings to Halo (as i felt i should pass it on since growing up i didn't have someone to pass it on to me, so i'd like to give them that experience). My previous attempt with Halo 1 with just the two of them doing split screen didn't go to well, because one of them was kind of being a dick to the other and killing him repeatedly. That was ages ago though, so i was hoping things had changed. Just in case though we did Halo 3 3-player Co-Op so i could be there to supervise.

I didn't realize that Player 3 (and presumably 4) got to be Elites. I really like that detail instead of just making them generic Master Chiefs like the older games. We ended up making it all the way to Floodgate before calling it quits. They played on easy mode, but that's okay because they were having fun and i needed the Easy Mode playlist out of the way anyways.

After they scuttled off to do whatever it is they do, i decided to use my time Achievement Hunting. I went through Halo 3 and tracked down Every Achievement i could find easily enough.

The first achievements on the block for me were the Primate ones. The were a bit difficult to find, i think partly because of my Monitors settings, but i had a lot of fun looking for it.

The next one i did was the developer one. I ended up using the Skull that lets you fly for it (and it was the only one i thought to use it for, for some reason).

And then, thankfully, the next few were multiplayer map ones. This one was from the Hippo one. I hopped into forge and scoured the floor for it. I ended up looking a while for it though because i thought it would be more obvious. While i was on this Multiplayer map trend i also got the Man on The Moon one and the Sounds Familiar one.

After this, i went and did the Cool Story Bro achievement. I struggled a bit on this one because i just can't get used to the Warthog Physics in Halo. They're just odd to work with for me. Luckily after about 20 minutes of attempts i made it.

And the finally, i did the Mind the Gap achievement. this is the one i wish i had used the Flying Skull for, because it took forever. Walking on foot to get all the warthogs. It was worth it personally for me though because i get to brag that i did it all without skulls (albeit due to my own negligence).

I didn't get a screenshot of this, but i also managed to do the entire first level of Combat Evolved on LASO. It wasn't as hard as i was expecting, but it was still a challenge. I started on the level Halo but had to stop because i was kind of trapped with just a Assault Rifle. I'm thinking of either going back at it with Co-Op, or starting the level over.

Since the end of January, thousands of people across the globe have received a stop work order as a result of the new US administration’s decision to “pause” global aid for 90 days. In the field of transitional justice, from conflict to post-conflict countries, from small NGOs working with survivors of rape to large behemoths providing advice to state’s institutions, nearly every organisation has been affected.
