U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he plans to impose tariffs on imported cars around April 2.

Trump made the remark in the Oval Office when asked by reporters about his auto tariff comments earlier in the week.

"Over the next — sometime, maybe, around April 2," Trump said. "I would have done them on April 1, believe it or not. I'm a little superstitious. No, literally, we had it planned for April 1. I said, 'let's make it April 2.'

. . .

The scope of the tariffs is unclear.

Interestingly, some parts involved in auto manufacturing cross the border up to 5 times before being put into a car. Will they be taxed 25% every time they cross from Canada to the US?

Time for Republicans to admit that Trump was a DEI hire.

The engine for the F150 and Mustang is made in Canada. Good luck going anywhere with nothing under the hood.

Oh that won't happen. Just the price will skyrocket :D.

Mump is solving the global warming crisis! First slap a tariff on the raw materials coming from Canada to the US for machining, then go through Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs to the assembly plants in Mexico, then this new round of tariffs on the finished product going to car lots in the US.

It’ll be so expensive that nobody will be able to afford to buy a vehicle, curbing emissions overnight! The oil industry will collapse as a result.

Does this idiot not realize all of his “American” cars are made in Mexico and then imported??

[–] unscholarly_source 7 points 17 hours ago

He doesn't care about his American cars.. he just greenlit a $1T Japanese manufacturing partnership, which includes Toyota, while Ford CEO says it blows a hole in US automotive sector...

Finding a non-US version of this was harder than it needed to be.. https://asiatimes.com/2025/02/japan-goes-for-broke-with-1-trillion-trump-bet/

He sabotaged NA automotive, while inviting foreign automotive over.

This stupid, stupid man doesn't understand money.

And I'm not the one saying it, the Wall Street Journal does. That's right: even Rupert Murdoch's very own propaganda outlet admits the president is a fucking idiot.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That's because Murdoch is afraid he's going to lose money due to Trump's stupidity.

Sounds like you two agree

The next episode of Trump drama! I can’t wait for Canada to trade more with the EU!

If prices go down Trump is a JENIUS! And when they go up its BIDENS FAULT!

There’s a pattern of brewing menace on a Friday afternoon only to downplay them on Monday. Or it’s just me reading too much out of this chaos?

That aspect may just be him + cronies buying the dip as the market adjusts to his nonsense. If only the market could do something for us now 🥲
