[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

lemm.ee is shutting down at the end of the month.

[. . .] there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join

Damn, that sucks. Good luck to the admins of lemm.ee on their future endeavors.

Do you know if theres another "low drama, federate with most everyone" instance .ee users are headed to? .ml is fine, but it requires a VPN here in China.

Coincidence. They just wait long enough until the previous war is out of the people's minds, or enough young people weren't even alive when it happened to do it again. And again. And again.

Coincidence? Like the increase in global warming relative to the decrease in the number or pirates globally? I think not.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

If I understand statistics, this means we can fight global warming by simply ramping up piracy!

The politicians running the show and most of their voters are old enough to remember. Young people play less and less of a role in western politics.

Republican administrations.

How does this correlate with AC usage and oil prices

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago

Haha, I like this one.

I've unironically come around to think that people worshipping the sun were not wrong

The sun's pretty awesome

It may as well be our God. Sun dies out ? No chance of life.

[–] Stalinwolf 27 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I've dabbled enough in paganism to confirm that worshiping nature and the sun is a hell of a lot more meaningful than making up shit about God and wearing special hats. Sure, we know what nature and the sun is, but it doesn't make it any less spectacular, or any less of a genuine creator before our very eyes.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Why not worship nature and wear special hats? Most of the witches I know do both.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I've said this for a few years as well. At least the sun is real. It provides life, it doesn't even kill very many people, definitely doesn't condemn anyone to an eternity of suffering.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, and a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to 'God' are all answered at about the same 50% rate.

He was a treasure that we're sorely lacking now. RIP.

The suffering of gingers in the sun is finite.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

It doesn't feel finite, I'll tell you that much.

When Dawn Breaks would beg to differ.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

I don't know what that is. Is it a movie or video game?

The Sun god demands more sacrifices

Chemtrails but it's the sun

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 weeks ago

So all this time it was the suns fault, sending its war inducing sneezes at us

Come on, don't leave us hanging here. What did you add???

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'd buy you a beer for this one.

I wonder if the old spurious correlations website is still around

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

It is, unfortunately it seems to be full of AI bullshit now.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I am not as critical of Ai as many here are, but this is the slopiest AI slop that I have seen in a long time.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

It seems intentional lol

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

I did find that site last night, but assumed it was not the original. Now, actually at a PC, I see this:

If you are thinking, "I've seen charts like these before," you probably have and they were probably mine! The original version of spurious correlations was published on the web in 2014, and in book form in 2015. I am that same guy. These charts are also frequently used in class materials, textbooks, and elsewhere because they are not copywritten.

In January 2024, I released a big update to the project based on user feedback. I added 25,000 new variables, improved and expanded the discover feature, and added a sprinkle of GenAI (including spurious scholar). Thank you to all the teachers, students, and other nerds who provided input on this version!

Disappointing.

Pirates vs Climate Change....

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'd call it a hypothesis, but it's interesting.
