My mom and dad give me everything I ask for. Delicious food, toys, clothes. Love. That is, under one condition. To never open the basement door. I often find myself drawn to it. Wondering what would happen if I opened it. I had tried once. One single time when I was young. My parents punished me. I never forgot the sight of blood flowing down my body, a dark red liquid- like burning oil. I never dared again. But today, my parents aren’t home. They went outside to buy some bottles of my medication. It’s a strange medicine that makes me feel sick.. As if I have another consciousness just waiting to burst out- a hidden predicament that keeps buzzing in my mind.

But they say it’s just for my own good…Maybe it is. I walked up to the basement door, and broke open the lock. I peeked outside and smiled. For the first time in my life, I had walked out of the basement and felt the sun on my skin.

I took my first step into the sun, blinking at the golden blaze overhead. The world outside was quieter than I imagined. Too quiet. No birds. No breeze. Just… stillness. I walked down the driveway, barefoot. Everything seemed frozen, like a photograph waiting to be smudged. A man watering his garden stood perfectly still, the water arcing midair like glass. I blinked. The image twitched. Then the sky rewound.

Suddenly I was back at the basement door. Had I opened it? I couldn’t remember. My mind was fuzzy…but the fuzziness had a clarity now.. Like glass which had finally been broken, light inching through the cracks. A note was wedged beneath the doorframe: "Take your medicine." But I had already flushed the pills…right? I couldn’t remember… Suddenly, a jab of pain stabbed my mind, my eyes widening as if a hidden memory had been remembered once more. I turned and saw the basement for what it really was.

There were no windows. No clock. No calendar.

Only rows of photos taped to the walls— photos of me at different ages. In some I looked frightened.

In others… restrained.

One had today's date scrawled across it: "Exit Protocol Initiated- Subject shows signs of curiosity." Flashbacks flooded my mind. Or were they memories? I don't know. There were rows of tanks. Not filled with fluid. Filled with bodies. Dozens—no, hundreds. All in various stages of decomposition, each wearing the same bracelet as mine.

It was all me—strapped to a gurney, eyes half-lidded, lips parted as if mid-sentence. Beside me stood my parents. But not my parents. People wearing their faces. People who looked like them but didn’t blink. Didn’t age. My stomach turned.

I checked the mirror nearby. My reflection looked normal—until it glitched. Just once. Then again. For a moment, I saw something beneath my skin. Wires. Fiber. A flicker of light in my pupils.

I flinched as the door creaked open, trying to suppress the burning pain in my chest- or was that programmed too? Was all the love, the happiness, the joy I had felt until now, just a facade composed between the lines of coding? Just a predetermined emotion, that never was truly mine?

My mother stepped in. But she was too young. I noticed it this time. All too perfect. Her smile glitched at the corners.

"You weren't supposed to wake up yet," she said, her voice crackling like a broken speaker- as if it warped through somewhere on the walls, as if they knew what I’d seen. "We’ll have to start the simulation over."

Darkness surged in. When I opened my eyes, I was at the dinner table. Warm food. Toys. Love. And a basement door. Still locked. Except this time, I remembered.

I finally knew. I wasn’t their child. I was their experiment.

Been playing Mario Maker 2 on the Switch 2 lately and it's crazy how different the "Course World" feels. 4 years ago the "Popular" page was always filled with these awful levels that just played themselves or were "Refreshing" by spamming a bunch of sound effects and wavy particles, but now its full of actual well designed courses.

~~ I also somehow stumbled into some sort of.. chatroom where people just role-played stuff in a level comment section. dunno what that was about~~

The best thing about the Switch 2 is that dying in mario maker takes half a second less time to respawn. Dying in mario maker is so frustrating, the game needs instant respawns like celeste or super meat boy already. Really hoping that might get added in a potential Switch 2 update.

Has anyone else been playing Mario Maker?

If anyone wants to try any of my Mario Levels here is my ID: 0XB-33C-RVF

China plays a key role in Russia's war against Ukraine, supporting Russia while also being interested in preserving the semi-destroyed Russian economy. This allows Beijing to control the Russian economy and influence political processes in Moscow, according to Volodymyr Ohryzko, Director of the Centre for Russian Studies in Ukraine [and Ukraine's former Minister of Foreign Affairs].

"China, through the words of its foreign minister, has said that it will not allow Russia to lose. Therefore, this means that China has been helping and will continue to help Russia wage war against Ukraine. It's obvious and clear whose side China is on. On the other hand, will China help Russia too much? Here, I have huge doubts," Ohryzko noted [on Espreso TV].

[...]

Today China controls practically everything that happens in the Russian economy. It dictates the prices at which it buys or will buy goods from Russia now or in the future. Therefore, China needs a half-dead Russian economy that it can manage as it pleases and accordingly influence what happens in Moscow, according to Ohryzko.

"Thus, in this triangle of Beijing–Washington–Moscow, the last one (Russia, ed.) is a zero without a stick. It's the third wheel, which will be invited to the table only when the key issues between the two serious players are resolved. That is, this is already obvious and clear to everyone," Ohryzko remarked.

Washington (AFP) – The White House on Monday barred The Wall Street Journal from traveling with US President Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to Scotland, after the newspaper reported that he wrote a bawdy birthday message to his former friend, alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

The move comes after Trump on Friday sued the WSJ and its media magnate owner Rupert Murdoch for at least $10 billion over the allegation in the article, which Trump denies.

The Trump administration's handling of the Epstein case has threatened to split the Republican's far-right Make America Great Again (MAGA) base, with some of his supporters calling for a full release of the so-called "Epstein Files."

The punishment of the Wall Street Journal marks at least the second time the Trump administration has moved to exclude a major news outlet from the press pool over its reporting, having barred Associated Press journalists from multiple key events since February.

"As the appeals court confirmed, The Wall Street Journal or any other news outlet are not guaranteed special access to cover President Trump in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One, and in his private workspaces," said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

"Due to The Wall Street Journal's fake and defamatory conduct, they will not be one of the thirteen outlets on board (Air Force One)."

Trump departs this weekend for Scotland, where he owns two golf resorts and will meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Earlier this month, the US Department of Justice, under Trump-appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi, said there was no evidence suggesting disgraced financier Epstein had kept a "client list" or was blackmailing powerful figures before his death in 2019.

In its story on Thursday, the WSJ reported that Trump had written a suggestive birthday letter to Epstein in 2003, illustrated with a naked woman and alluding to a shared "secret."

Epstein, a longtime friend of Trump and multiple other high-profile men, was found hanging dead in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges that he sexually exploited dozens of underage girls at his homes in New York and Florida.

The case sparked conspiracy theories, especially among Trump's far-right voters, about an alleged international cabal of wealthy pedophiles.

Epstein's death -- declared a suicide -- before he could face trial supercharged that narrative.

Since returning to power in January, Trump has moved to increase control over the press covering the White House.

In February, the Oval Office stripped the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) of its nearly century-old authority to oversee which outlets have access to certain restricted presidential events, with Trump saying that he was now "calling the shots" on media access.

In a statement, the WHCA president urged the White House to "restore" the Journal to the pool.

"This attempt by the White House to punish a media outlet whose coverage it does not like is deeply troubling, and it defies the First Amendment," said WHCA President Weijia Jiang.

"Government retaliation against news outlets based on the content of their reporting should concern all who value free speech and an independent media."

The request could be problematic since San Francisco is a sanctuary city which means it doesn't cooperate with ICE.

The U.S. Department of Justice is requesting for San Francisco's Sheriff Paul Miyamoto to release information on all people being held in county jails who are not citizens.

The request could be problematic since San Francisco is a sanctuary city which means it doesn't cooperate with ICE.

"The letter requested information on any non-citizens that are in our custody. That have criminal charges or convictions and as well if they do have it their date or release," said SF Sheriff Paul Miyamoto.

In a press release, the U.S Department of Justice requested counties like San Francisco to hand over information to "assist federal immigration authorities in prioritizing the removal of illegal aliens who committed crimes."

The request goes on to say that The Department of Justice hopes California sheriffs will voluntarily produce this information, but if necessary "the Department will pursue all available means of obtaining the data, including through subpoenas or other compulsory process."

Luz Pena: "Does this letter change anything?

Sheriff Miyamoto: "I think, and I can't speak for the U.S. Attorney General, but it is an attempt to work with us and focusing on individuals with criminal histories as part of their enforcement efforts."

A letter many heard about as U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently visited San Francisco's Alcatraz, where the administration has announced plans to reopen it as a federal prison.

"This is a threat from the White House. This has been the trend that the immigrant legal resource center has been observing, and I think this kind of threat is in response to local policies," said Sarah Lee, Immigrant Legal Resource Center Senior Community Organize.

"Sanctuary cities have an absolute right to just say 'no' to request from the federal government with regard with immigrant enforcement because that is a federal responsibility, not a local or state one," said Chan.

One aspect of Guix I found to be really fascinating: That there is basically no conceptual difference between defining a package as a private build script, and using a package as part of the system.

Let me explain: Say you wrote a little program in Python which uses a C library (or a Rust library with C ABI) which is in the distribution. Then, in Guix you would put that librarie's name and needed version into a manifest.scm file which lists your dependency, and makes it available if you run guix shell in that folder. It does not matter whether you run the full Guix System, or just use Guix as s package manager.

Now, if you want to install your little python program as part of your system, you'll write an install script or package definition, which is nothing else than a litle piece of Scheme code which contains the name of your program, your dependency, and the information needed to call python's build tool.

The point I am making is now that the only thing which is different between your local package and a distributed package in Guix is that distributed packages are package definitions hosted in public git repos, called 'channels'. So, if you put your package's source into a github or codeberg repo, and the package definition into another repo, you now have published a package which is a part of Guix (in your own channel). Anybody who wants to install and run your package just needs your channel's URL and the packages name. It is a fully decentral system.

In short, in Guix you have built-in something like Arch's AUR, just in a much more elegant and clean manner - and in a fully decentralized way.

Billionaire In-N-Out owner Lynsi Snyder stirred up a storm of online controversy over the weekend when she revealed that she planned to move her family out of California to Tennessee. The news comes as In-N-Out begins to expand heavily into the South, launching a new joint headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, near Nashville — where Snyder will also now be based.

I did a very deep dive into the history of Libre Software and stuff, and how "Open Source" became a term. And speculated out of it a whole theory about AI, ICE and US Politics in general.

Probably the best article I've ever written.
