Pun intended, but still a serious question.

Would a neutron matter? (Pun also intended, but also serious)

Have been thinking of reducing hair length as it's nearing summer in my place and the temperature is rising. I generally choose a shorter(relatively) hairstyle during the summer and monsoon, because it feels cooler in the former and easier to dry in the second one.

Was thinking about it and remembered reading on how the hair on the head helps to reduce effects of UV rays. I don't stay out in the sun too much, so likely not an issue for me.

Started thinking about what the range of best summer hairstyles would be for people of different hair type(straight, curly, wavy/inbetween both) etc. and asking about it here to see how/what other people on think about it.

Even better if you can provide your own understanding of its meaning.

Mine would be :

"Nothing kills a man as much as being forced to represent a country" (and err considering the context, I must stress it has nothing to do with the current US shitshow), by a WW1 soldier, illustrator and writer named Jacques Vaché.

For me it just means being forced into representing a group (national, of course, but maybe also social, racial, sexual, professional, any kind of group) or defining one's identity only by reference to a group is to be avoided at all costs.

Note : Its not the same, imho, as engaging in a collective struggle or defense against a common oppression.

How about you?

I want to shop local, but when I google locally owned stores they're all boutique-type stuff or restaurants. How do I find deodorant and a bag of sugar?

To those who live in or who have visited the United States.

Growing up in the 90's, the "minimum acceptable" tip was 10%, average was 15%, and a good tip was 20%. These days, I just round to the nearest dollar and tip 20%, but I've heard these days it's not unusual to tip up to 40%!

What do you usually do?

Something that shows the extent to which they are in sync and aligned, maybe even how their narratives co-develop in terms of timing

I just realized my library card gives me access to an app I can borrow magazines from. And as someone trying to do less Lemmy scrolling at night and more long form reading, I’m wondering where to start.

I generally like politics, philosophy, interesting facts, history, social issues.

Also, I’m not American if that matters.

What’s your favorite magazines!

Think this is because I just updated fonts-noto-color-emoji?

Well, in any event, this is an outrage I shall not stand for! 😉

EDIT: Well, this is what happens when you aim for Vietnamization, I guess. 🤷

EDIT EDIT: Using the menu editor on Linux Mint Cinnamon, you can usually edit the comments for an app by clicking on its preferences, and ironically I was doing that to mark the apps that are US-based with the flag as a reminder to find alternatives to them!

I need extensions way too much to use something built from scratch, so as Firefox joins the enshittification bandwagon, what's the best Firefox-based browser I should check out?

Given the engineered collapse of USAID and the NIH in the USA, as well as their turning away from WHO support, what are the most likely future scenarios? Can the other developed nations mount a credible pandemic response without the resources of the USA?

I am especially interested in global perspectives because pathogens don’t need passports. How might this impact the global order?

I do not immediately judge those who are unlike me, but I am a part of the childfree crowd (and to an enormous extent promote adoption over childbirth, which is in no way atypical among childfree people), and the topic of being childfree showed up in the most unexpected conversation today.

So... I'm not going to go into specifics since many of them are already overblown topics, but I'll start off by summarizing and saying a lot of people hold a "neutral people are as guilty as the wrongdoers" viewpoint. A kind of Edmund Burke or Anakin Skywalker way of thinking that has been used when it comes to neutrality in promoting world leaders, not helping human lives, etc. I saw two people debate about this, and one of them brought up the question "how do you feel about people who don't adopt?"

"I don't judge them, it's not even that common. Why do you ask?"

"Visualize a bunch of children. Some are on the streets and some are in foster care centers. They suffer and suffer, and they look out onto the streets to see parents who willingly chose to go through the pain of childbirth to use their bodies to spend and convert a bunch of inanimate atoms into an entity that will be using more of our air and needs to eat [rather than going the painless route of adopting a child that is already in existence and needs a home]. Then they look at other people who don't want to give birth and have birth children but still look in indifference at all the suffering parentless children. Around half of adults on Earth are currently childless, and yet around a fifth of children are in broken homes or are parentless. It is the closest thing to willfully being evil that the majority of humans come to. I'm sure most of the people obsessing over insurance for example are going to opt for no children or for birth children."

That last part resonated with me. I'm testing this out because I'm interested in this as a mental exercise. What's your view on people who don't adopt, including yourself if you can justify it?

Afaik, archive.md / archive.today used to work but now it doesn't.

Even when browsing while signed in, linkedin will notify them about any person who viewed their profile. I know one can turn on anonymous mode, but still it will notify them.

Does anyone know a way to browse this website without being logged in ?

Went to visit this godforsaken place and was terrified by the amount of racist/xenophobic/nazi/misogynistic/incel/far-right posts and comments.

Was it always like that? Am I too used to being on Lemmy (or Fediverse in general)? Is it just my feed or is it like this for everybody?
