I wrote a guide to help users with their migration to Lemmy

This guide will help new lemmy users find and subscribe-to (remote) lemmy ~~subreddits~~ communities

I’m just wondering if there is an implementation of a Lemmy instance that is distributed? As if multiple servers could host the same instance, e.g. lemmy.ca. This would help to reduce the load and cost of an instance. Also it would make it harder for an instance to get abandoned.

Sorry for the short notice, but I will be performing some server maintenance at 10:30 CST tonight.

I am going to switch to the next plan up (6 CPU 4 GB RAM) and take a snapshot of the VM while i'm at it. I'm hoping it shouldn't take too long.

I plan on doing a longer "State of the Instance" post soon, just to update everyone with how we're doing with donations, etc.

edit: 10:51 PM - Maintenance is complete!

Maybe I'm blind, but is there a setting to change the default sort method for comments? It always defaults to "hot" and I want to default to "top". It's kind of annoying to have to click "top" every single time I open a comment section.

The Chart of Controllers

This was originally from r/coolguides. Who wants to start up that community here?

Edit: I just went and did it. Come check it out! https://lemmy.ca/c/coolguides

I'm looking for communities to subscribe to so I went to the Communities page then selected All but I can't sort the listed communities. My cursor changes to a finger when I hover over the Subscribers column but nothing happens when I click on it or any of the other columns..

Exiting to see so much new traffic in Lemmy the past few days.

While I don't think recreating Reddit in the Fediverse is necessarily a good idea, there were a few subs that really helped me discover new content. I looked, and didn't see anything directly comparable, so I created two new communities:

https://lemmy.ca/c/lemmy411 - yep - can't find what you're looking for (or perhaps what instance it might be on?) ask here.

https://lemmy.ca/c/wowthislemmyexists - find something cool? post about it here for others to discover as well.

(this will be cross-posted to a few other places as well)

A great read on what's happening to the social platforms around us.

Hello all!

I've got a few things to announce.

We've grown by over 200 users since May 30. That's about 28 users/day, which is huge compared to what it's been before that. I'm very happy to see the increased activity, and hope this place (and lemmy/the fediverse in general) will become the goto spot for social interactions and link sharing. I'm excited for what the future will bring! Also thanks to many of you for making me laugh in your registration applications.

As this server grows, I think it would be a good idea to have some admins (I'm thinking 2 to start), to help with approving new user registrations, and dealing with Reports. Ideally, I'd like to leave most reports up to the community moderators, but for things that go against the site-wide rules, I'd like to have a team of 3 so we can deal with these things as a group. I haven't fully decided on how I will pick the admins, but I will make another post when I'm ready to do that.

I've thought about a new logo for lemmy.ca. Are there any graphic designers here that would like to create a new logo? I don't really have anything in mind other than something to do with Canada, obviously.

Lastly, since some users have asked, I've setup two places where users can donate to support the server. The monthly costs to run the server is currently around $25 CAD/month, which includes weekly backups (which I may change to daily). Anyways, donations are completely optional, but greatly appreciated! They can be made here:

https://liberapay.com/lemmy.ca/
https://opencollective.com/lemmy-ca

I'll add those links to the main sidebar as well.

If you have any feedback for anything above, let me know!

hey,

for some reason i can't see the vancouver community from my beehaw account (eg https://beehaw.org/c/[email protected] returns a 404 and it doesn't show up in https://beehaw.org/communities), but https://lemmy.ca/c/vancouver works just fine, any idea why that would be?

thanks!

Blocklist (self.main)

Is there a list of blocked instances somewhere? I was trying to interact with a thread from lemmygrad i found on lemmy.ml but could not get it to come up in search. This makes me assume its blocked

240

I see that Lemmy is creating a new link to images hosted outside of this instance. Are they stored on the server even if I post an outside link ? (Asking as a way to find best practice regarding server load with pix)

Sorry for the extended downtime, I messed up when attempting to copy over the media. I should have just rsync'd it to begin with, rather than attempting to compress it first.

Anyways, everything looks to be working, but it may take a bit for DNS to be updated for everyone.

Let me know if you have any issues!

AFAIK https://matrix.to/#/#lo_canada:mozilla.org is the biggest Canada themed matrix chat room. It's not partnered with Lemmy.ca or anyone and I believe they were asked before and didn't want to partner up.

They specifically don't want to do a discord or telegram bridge iirc.

So we could try to make a Lemmy.ca matrix chat room and bridge it to telegram and discord.

I can take care of the bridging, but it's very easy. Ex discord instructions

I only really use element/Matrix and it's better if everyone only uses those, but i respect that other ppl use discord and telegram and don't want to switch.

This discord server is very cooperative https://discord.gg/gEWcR7w4TW so that would be where the discord channel would be located. You could even join it now to check it out since it's fully operational.

There is no operational matrix or telegram atm.

If you want to do a matrix or telegram, tot set it up now and put the link in the comments.

There has been a steady trickle of new users here today, and in the past little while, mostly due to the bad decisions that reddit is currently making.

Anyways, welcome! Feel free to look around, and if you have any questions about anything lemmy related, feel free to ask!

Also, if you feel up to it, introduce yourself in the comments below!

edit: Here's a nice getting started guide for lemmy: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2023/06/11/lemmy-migration-find-subreddits-communities/

i should have added it here a while ago!

I followed my communities from my Mastodon account on die-partei.social to stay up to date. Now I noticed that nothing showed up in my timeline for quite a long time.

Apparently the following has been locked. Communities on lemmy.ml I can still follow without any problems, on lemmy.ca communities I get a notice that a follower request was made - which of course never arrived. The same applies to the attempt to follow my own lemmy.ca account from Mastodon.

Was this option intentionally blocked, is there a problem here?

246

So if I look at a community's page on the instance proper, like: https://lemmy.ml/c/artificial_intel . There are posts there that are not reflected when I look at it from lemmy.ca: https://lemmy.ca/c/[email protected] Including a post that I've posted from Lemmy.ca!

Is there something I'm misunderstanding about federation that would lead to this behaviour?

We have beehaw.org listed as a linked instance. Similarly, they have lemmy.ca listed, yet when i try to access one of their communities like https://lemmy.ca/c/[email protected] i get an error message

the upgrade seemed to go pretty smooth. please let me know if you have any issues.

i'm planning on upgrading lemmy.ca to v0.17.0 on friday evening (Feb 3, 2023), probably starting around 9pm CST.

it sounds like the database upgrade required could take a while, so expect at least a few hours of downtime.
