An odd issue. I've noticed that while on lemmy.ca some thumbnails seem to show up but way less than when directly on other lemmy instances, even when in the same community.

Is there some issue here? Or maybe some setting to show or not show thumbnails, either in the instance software or in the user settings?

I was trying to create an additional account 2 times with 12 hours difference and every time when I press "Sign Up" waiting animation spins forever. Is it me or Lemmy.ca experiencing issues?

I mentioned in one of my previous posts that emails from lemmy.ca didn't appear to be working for a small number of people. This issue should hopefully resolved now. Please let me know if you aren't receiving them still.

Also, I created a [email protected] community, where all the news about this instance will go. I'll cross post it to main for a while before switching over to meta only eventually.

Title says it all. I just can’t figure out how to somehow mark a post so I can come back to it later and any additional comments, etc.

I'm trying to figure out how to get hachyderm.io posts to show up on my "Subscribed" feed in Lemmy, but i think I'm missing something

I just created a new community Gay History https://lemmy.ca/c/sharinggayhistory

I'm a big fan of the Making Gay History Podcast and recently have seen a fair number of tumblr posts and comments about younger LGBT folk not knowing their history.

So, a resource for those stories and histories of the Lesbian, Gay and Trans people upon whose shoulders we stand.

Just wanted to say thanks to the host of this instance.

The mini essay was a great idea. I definitely believe it will keep out at least some level of the riff and the raff. As much as people may dislike the idea of a gatekeeper, I believe it will make and keep the community much more fun, friendly, and useful.

I feel much more at ease on this service than on Reddit. I don't feel like I'm arguing with bots and trolls. Or dealing with bad actors and agitators. I'm discussing things. Reading the actual articles. And not doom scrolling. The nature of this service seems more organic.

Again. Thank you for your time and service to this (hopefully) growing community.

I would like to join a community on Friendica-instance horche.demkontinuum.de. Would be nice if it could be whitelisted. :)

If this place gets super busy, the front page will be unusable. Is there a way to turn this off?

IMO, the default Lemmy style is ridiculous on desktop (especially widescreen). I saw a few posts on other servers with some Stylus CSS changes and they were a good start. I made a few changes to get rid of some of the crazy font sizes, padding/margin, and width.

The CSS: https://pastebin.com/b71sNaRe

Stylus Chrome extenstion: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylus/clngdbkpkpeebahjckkjfobafhncgmne

Screenshots: https://i.imgur.com/UdKigJD.png https://i.imgur.com/PBNb1SK.png

Hopefully this makes things more bearable for a few people. (If you use dark mode, just delete lines 10, 11, and 12.)

I recently made a community, [email protected]. The community can be seen from this instance, but isn't accessible from other ones.

For example, if I go to https://lemmy.one/c/[email protected] , I get an error.

Is there some requirement communities have to reach before they appear on other instances? Is this a bug?

Sorry if the answer is obvious or has been asked before, but I couldn't find any info on this.

I’m totally cool with the federation with lemmyNSFW instance and actually I made an account over there so I could subscribe to my favorite porn subs.

But, I’d also prefer to keep it separate from my lemmy.ca account feed. I don’t like to use the block nsfw option in my profile because NSFW isn’t just sexual content/porn. So basically, it would be awesome if there were a way to optionally block the entire instance on an account level, or optionally just not have posts from lemmyNSFW show up in All & Local. Communities are rapidly being created and I’ll never keep up blocking them one by one. I know not everyone likes to keep things separate and that’s why I’m wondering if this can be an option in a future update.

I'm new to the Fediverse and I'm still trying to understand how this all works. While browsing the All/Federated home page, I saw some posts which seemed to be pornographic. It got me thinking about the rules of Lemmy instances. Lemmy.ca has a "no porn" rule. Hypothetically, if I were to use my Lemmy.ca account to post porn on an instance which allows that type of content, would I be in violation of Lemmy.ca's rules?

I guess the question is related to my confusion about where federated content is stored. If I use my Lemmy.ca account to reply to a Lemmy.ml thread, which server does my comment "live" in? If I were to delete my Lemmy.ca account, would all my comments in Lemmy.ml disappear too?

Hello all! 👋

A few things to cover here.

First of all, I would like to thank all who donated for their generosity. I don't know if I've said it before, but 100% of the donations are going directly to the hosting costs.

I believe I fixed the issues with federation (it was just a problem in my nginx configuration), so interoperability with mastodon should be working again. Sorry about that! I haven't tested other software, such as friendica and kbin, but I'm hoping they should be working again too.

We've surpassed 2,000 users! 🎉 I love seeing the all engagement! Also, thank you for the reports as well, I would like to keep this instance safe & welcoming to all, and can't do it without your help.

I've also noticed there's a few servers that my e-mail server is not happy trying to send e-mails to. by default it's set up to be fairly picky about the servers it connects to, and I've noticed that it's refusing to deliver to some with self-signed or certs that don't match the domain. I'll be working on getting that resolved in the next few days too.

Last but not least, I've added @[email protected] to help me out with some admin duties. Please give him a warm welcome! I plan on adding a third soon too.

As always, let me know if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or whatever.

Kbin is another link aggregator on the #Fediverse. I expected I could subscribe to a "magazine" (they're equivalent of subreddits) by going to something like https://lemmy.ca/c/[email protected] but that doesn't seem to work.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it just server load do to the #redditMigration or is this a feature that doesn't yet exist?

When I joined, just a few days ago, the number of users at lemmy.ca had just climbed above a thousand. I see that now it's well over two thousand.

That's quite the growth!

Hi, I noticed that the community search function doesn't work that well. Sometimes I can find communities I'm looking for, but other times I can't; even when I know they exist on other instances. Are these just part of the growing pains?

I'm starting to understand the whole federated feed thing, but I'd like more control over it. E.g., I'm on a national instance, so I get every little small town community popping up. Do I just have to block them as I go until I don't see them anymore, or is there a better way?

i've updated to 0.17.4, which has some security fixes and db optimizations. official release notes should be out tomorrow.

0.18.0 will hopefully coming soon which should help more with performance issues, by getting rid of websockets.

edit: release notes

I've tried connecting to Lemmy.ca from other instances, but it doesn't seem to work.

Is this just a growing pains thing?

Edit: For example I can't subscribe to communities on lemmy.ca from kbin.social.

I also can't connect to any communities on Lemmy.world.

If you ever visit "All" to see about what community you might be interested, chances are you see the batches of nsfw posts from one of those bot instances.

Here is what you can currently do as a user:

  • click the block button "stop sign" icon to block the bot account. It's pretty quick and usually discreet as you don't need to visit their instance. And if the bot is setup to post for the wide different communities on that instance it won't show in your "All" feed again.

  • go to their instance and block all their existing communities. Very slow, sometimes the community icon, description might contain nsfw content. It's longer but if they changes the bot account name posts from those community won't show up.

  • tell the instance owner about the nsfw bot spamming instance and let them handle the filter. Note: I don't know if it actually works, cause if you click "all" I guess it tries to fetch from fediverse? please correct me if I am wrong.
