It would be nice to see the collapse discussed in real-time, but also have something to reference in the future as significant turning points.

Probably [email protected] ?

Edited to make the name linkable. Also, I guess it's nice for you. But it fucking sucks for many of us.

Edit 2: added alternate link out of curiosity.

I'm directly affected by Trump, but I think the decline started decades ago. We're just at the hoverbike stage now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

The decline started in the late 70s. Like 80% of everything wrong in US politics can be traced back to Reagan.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Was just talking to the SO about how long ago we killed Glass Steagall 😭😭

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

The Democrats were well and truly captured by the corporate plutocracy at that point, by decades.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

404 edit: ok if you include the /c/ only lemmy instances can follow it

Relative links are a minefield because sometimes ! works and sometimes it federates a direct link that is worthless

[email protected] should work on any fediverse platform.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Thanks for the info.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Thanks, subbed! This is focused on Trump though, and I don't think the decline started with or ends with his presence.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Connect (Android app), interprets the first link as a(n inexistent) user profile; alternate one works perfectly.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Interesting. The first one (which actually points to /c/[email protected] ) works fine for me in Voyager.

Good to know, so thanks for the heads-up. Sounds like the second format is the more universally accepted one.

I'm making a personal list. It's so fucking long already...

slrpnk.net is such an underrated instance

[–] [email protected] 25 points 5 days ago

Any of the US news communities would be a good place to start. https://lemmy.world/c/keeptrack is tracking the 2nd Trump administration specifically.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 5 days ago

Theres like 30, i see news about it on every other post.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 days ago

[email protected]

There's a lot of collapse comms in other instances as well

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

keep track.

I'll be submitting weekly sourced round-ups of all the bullshit for everyone in the future to reference

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm sure there's a USA news community

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Literally every comment section is an American politics community

Even if it's a comm about ducks wearing hats, somecunt would mention maga

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Well is the duck wearing a maga hat?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, I'm guilty of this. For me, my more whimsical threads and comments are a healthy distraction from our new American autocratic hellscape. Some escapism is good for mental health. Sometimes I slip and mention of American politics because that's what's causing me stress, and that's a mistake. I shouldn't bring up politics so much.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Modern, polite societies - "Never bring up politics or religion in conversation, as you will never, ever change someone's mind about those two subjects, and it's both ignorant and arrogant to think you can"

Americans - "Hold my high fructose corn syrup!"

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You taking about the collapse of democracy in the US, or the disolution US as a nation state? Because I definitely don't think the later is happening any time soon.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Trump is threatening shutting down FEMA just to fuck with California. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few states start to talk about what the point of the union is.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They've got a big military, civil war two isn't going anywhere.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It's more subtle than that though. The Federal government can only call out the army in very targeted ways, and states already only obey federal laws that come with funding.

The official union won't disolve easily, but many of the practical benefits of the union may erode quickly.

The supreme court probably won't stop being the highest in the land, but executive orders and federal laws not backed by military action could quickly lose their current influence.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Is there one discussing organizing resistance?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, it's ov-- Removed by mod.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

[email protected]

We discuss these things. But don't use Mbin/Lemmy/Piefed to actually organize your local resistance efforts. It's too public. That's for encrypted platforms like Signal.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Subscribed!

...kinda. It says 'pending' and the last time I ran into that it was stuck there indefinitely. /shrug.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Or "How do you do fellow anarchists! I sure love Ted Kaczinski too! Just to make sure we're all on the same page, let's post photos of our driver's licenses and current location!"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Sure! Lemme just grab my wallet and- heyyy! You're just gonna make fun of my haircut, aren't you? I knew I couldn't trust you!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Just a heads-up: Everything you post on Lemmy is public, for the entire world to see, including your ip address and username.
So make sure you use a VPN in a friendly foreign country, do not re-use your username anywhere else, and do not post any info about yourself using the same account or IP address. Even so, those guidelines only protect against superficial surveillance.

For actually organizing resistance, a platform that offers privacy and encryption would be better suited.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think history books are meant to be the reference for later. And I think it's two separate jobs to report something that's currently happening. And analyzing it with hindsight and judging the impact and importance of the events. That's kind of impossible while we don't know the consequences yet.

[–] uhmbah 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Oh, just wait a little bit longer. Executive orders requiring the modification of recorded history is not far away.

The world may be mocking the Gulf of America, but if idiot boy makes it official, there's a whole country that'll be using that name.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

orders requiring the modification of recorded history is not far away.

That has already happened in some red states.

[–] SplashJackson 2 points 5 days ago

Just like freedom fries, right?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

We'll have to see about that. Changing history records and telling your story instead of the truth is as old as humanity. But with recent technological advances, we have misinformation on the rise. And we'll have to see whether we can tell apart a generated video from a recording of a historical event in 10 years time... I certainly hope so. And that kind of technology is going to make progess as well. Maybe facts are just a thing of the past... That kind of sides with OP though... I mean it'll be impossible to tell apart a record of events from fakes... But if you took them themselves and verified things while they're still happening, that could prove to be helpful.
