Pete Hoekstra thumbs through an imaginary document, and pauses for effect: “This is a serious proposal — pile one.” Then he raises a second document. “I can’t believe this,” he guffaws. “This is a joke.” Straight to the discard pile.

That, says President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Canada, is how it will go — one way or another — when newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney submits a proposal on a revamped economic and security agreement with the United States

My take on the entire thing as a Canadian - not worth sending a negotiating team. Not worth responding to. Not worth doing business with.

They don't honour the deals they sign. They are not held to account by congress or any functional court or rule of law or international trade body. They don't act rationally or in their self interest.

The US can now be defined as a rogue state and an irrational actor. The best move Canada can make is away from the US entirely.

Counterpoint: It's outrageous that your government arbitrarily inflicted economic harm on your best ally and neighbour in attempt to extort taxpayer money into the hands of your corrupt ruler. Also, you're an idiot if you did not see this coming. Hope that helps, and also fuck yourself into the stratosphere.

It's outrageous that the Americans are still trying to push the lie that they're somehow the victim in this.

The only thing they're the victim of is self-inflicted injuries.

“That is an insult to us,” he said. “We have not done anything like that.”

LOL what a clown.

What they've done is far worse. They've jeopardized our whole economy. People lost or will lose their jobs because of this. Many won't be able to retire because of this. This fucked with people's lives on so many levels.

Oh, yeah, the US has done nothing like that. They definitely have not been insulting us, saying we're not a viable country, and banning Canadian products via tariffs. Nope, glad the US hasn't done any of that to warrant this.

send some signals that that’s happening that you care deeply about this relationship, and you see it as a long term relationship, and America as a reliable somebody that you want as a reliable partner moving forward.

What the hell? Who on Earth sees America as a reliable partner you want for the long term? Did he just forget about trump ripping up the trade deal he himself signed his last term? What kind of a goof would place their trust in America nowadays?

We want to be in a mutually beneficial relationship, not an abusive one.
