Same thing as Christians and their anti-porn crusade. I got introduced to the concept of porn through church, lmao.
They were daring you to try to beat the stats.
In Canada back in the day cops would come into the classroom. They had big boards with all the drugs attached. More than a few times, they disappeared off the board.
I remember a constable coming to class with one of these and commenting that I had excellent veins should I ever do IV drugs. They 100% set us up to fail.
Don’t go get free ebooks on safe platforms like libgen or annas-archive !!
I have a DARE shirt that says 'Drugs Are Really Expensive' underneath and i feel like thats a more effective deterrent than anything they said in the program.
My dad would change the wording of Dare Tshirts with tipp-ex so that "dare to say no to drugs" would instead say "dare to say hi to roger" (in swedish) 😂
They taught us that drugs were evil and done by bad people. The first time I smoked pot, I realized I was lied to and wondered what other drugs were like.
There was definitely a point in my life that I saw weed users the same as heroin, etc.
I’ve never used either, but thankfully my views have changed anyway. It does show how much harm it causes when your informative spiels get one thing wrong.
Ah yes drugs are bad. Weed kills you, etc.
You find out weed doesn't do any of the shit they said it did... Now absolutely everything they claimed is called into question. Why would they lie about X but not about Y?
DARE did more to make people learn that police cannot be trusted apart from maybe their general violent tendencies.
DARE should have just told me that pot would just make me really sleepy and make me eat too much... causing an 8 lb weight gain overnight. That would have been enough. They should have avoided telling me anything about speed.
I may be too european, but our one prez was about hard drugs! Half of it was about was a biology lesson about the nucleus accumbens and its deterioration! The other half was safety tips, apparently you can try every hard drug once with exemption to crystal meth without causing permanent damage! I didn’t know that until then, I would have probably never tried morphine once if not for that lesson…
Also didn’t the cia sell drugs? Maybe it really was an advertisement?
They showed us a video like
Acid makes you see sounds and taste colors, and isn't addictive... But don't do it!
Before the video I absolutely had no desire to try acid, and after the video all I could think was like "what does a color taste like?!?!"
One of my buddies loves to wear his D.A.R.E. sweatshirt when he smokes.
- Drugs
- Are
- Really
- Excellent
I found one that says "Dispensaries Are Really Expensive"
I also live in a waspy town and several people have noticed the DARE letters, struck up a conversation about how great the program was and we should bring it back, etc. Then they actually read it and get all huffy. Best $24.99 I ever spent.
In middle school, my health class was all about how in high school, there'd be all these crazy sex and drug fueled parties and one day I turned to my friend and said "I cannot wait for high school".
That program was started at around the same time that the US government flooded the country with Crack Cocaine to fund their illegal wars in Central America
If any one is wondering .... you should look up the story of Gary Webb
EDIT: .... and if anyone is paying attention ... the story that Webb uncovered basically ruined his life because the government hounded him like a dog until he lost everything. Even then, he still kept fighting, resisting and writing about all the terrible things the government was doing.
Then at the height of all the news about all this ... he died by suicide ... from two gunshot wounds to the head! ... and people tell me to stop believing in conspiracy theories. How the hell do you shoot yourself in the head twice to kill yourself.
A simplified retelling of this story is in the film 'Kill the Messenger' (2014) which stars Jeremy Renner
I did drugs before DARE. So, we knew they were full of shit. However it was the late 70s so we had legit caution about drugs that were administered with needles so avoided those... Then the cocaine era happened.
I remember learning about acid. If you do acid, you will freak out and stab a pencil through your eye.
I love two things about DARE:
-
Their mascot was an anthro lion.
-
They did more to get kids ON drugs than they did to get them OFF drugs.
And then there's former President George Bush, doing his part with Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue.
Totally made drugs more appealing.
What I always found funny later in life was they never said anything about DMT. It was like they didn't want us to be aware of DMT existing, even though it was discovered in the 30s, found naturally in the 40s, known hallucinogenic for hundreds or thousands of years, but only studied as a hallucinogen in the 50s.
DMT is a glorious hallucinogen that any psychonaut should pursue, it is easier to obtain than LSD and profoundly better with shorter lasting effects than LSD or mushrooms. You got an hour to spend and are willing to shatter reality? DMT can change your mind.
And told you to go home and ask your parents about their drug experiences.
My parents only ever said "Drugs are bad and evil, stay away from drugs, they are no laughing matter. Understand? Good. Now let's watch this Cheech and Chong movie."
One of my sociology professors was involved in a project to assess the effectiveness of DARE. She found that it was slightly effective with one group -- 8th grade boys.
Of course, her findings didn't fit the 80s narrative, so her study was shelved and the LAPD was happy.
Ah, yes, the ~~massively~~ ~~mostly~~ ~~kind of~~ not really at all successful D.A.R.E. Program.
It was successful at grabbing my interest. "Drugs Are Really Expensive" would have been a far better message.
Whaaaaat? You mean to tell me that the guys whose entire existence is justified by locking up poor people for drug use, whose "justice system" is just a front for legal slavery, ran an "anti" drug campaign that maybe wasn't super good? Almost like that was... the whole point?
As an 80s kid who endured DARE since – what 1988? – I wanted to let everyone know that I read this post and comments while being high.
DARE = Drugs Are Really Excellent
I was 100% the target audience for DARE lol. I remember my classmates asking me what drugs I wanted to try from the lesson and I would be so confused because the way the officer spoke of the effects made taking them seem very scary to me.
I'm now a big pothead so maybe I'm not that much of an outlier.
