Your microwave is a time machine. Only explanation

[–] [email protected] 61 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I am just trying to process that people are heating up coffee in the microwave 😳

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

How do you heat up coffee?

[–] [email protected] 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't! I drink it cold like a real woman!

Jokes aside, the thought of reheated coffee makes my skin crawl for some reason lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You are unironically correct. Cold (black) coffee is still great and reheated coffee tastes horrible.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I disagree, but I think people are WAY too snobby about coffee in general. I drink cheap coffee with soy milk, warm, cold, reheated. It's all the same.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You do you. I taste the difference.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

When drinking black (especially on a regular basis), you're going to notice the finer details of the actual flavor of the coffee, especially bitterness (or the lack thereof).

When you drink coffee with shittons of cream and sugar, that covers up essentially all of the bitterness, and makes a lot of the intricacies of coffee disappear.

I find the same thing goes with chocolate. A nice, 80+% dark chocolate will have a much more complex and rich flavor to me than, say, a milk chocolate (even a high quality milk chocolate). The bitterness is a big reason why. It leaves this amazing aftertaste that I can never get enough of.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why are you telling me, lol? ^^

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

It's more for other people reading the comment chain :P

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Reheated coffee doesn't taste any different

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

it becomes more bitter because more heat breaks down more of the oils in the coffee. it's why coffee that's been on a hotplate for a while becomes muddy.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

reheated espresso tastes a WHOLE lot different, and reheated latte or flat white etc… well… nothing about them is the same except the caffeine content at that point

i can’t speak much for drip because american and australian coffee preparations are very different, but i imagine it’d be similar: coffee has oils in it, and i imagine that when it cools down the oils would solidify out… reheating the oils would reliquify them, but i’m not sure they’d be evenly distributed or even in the liquid any more (could be on the cup)

similar reasons as to why freeze dried doesn’t taste as good

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It does to me and my fellow coffee snobs.

Edit: Apparently, it's a bit more complicated than that. Microwaving briefly up to about 65° is the way to go, if you don't like cold coffee.

Cold, black coffee is still delish.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah. Good coffee should taste good even when it's cold.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hey, it's you again.

I have no opinion on coffee temperature - I've never had a sample that I enjoyed, hot, cold or reheated - but my wife has the same problem depicted in the original post. I got her some rechargeable heated mugs and now her drinks stay warm for a lot longer.

I don't know whether this is considered preferable to microwaving, but it does seem more convenient.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It is generally considered better.

The issue is a microwave cooks the coffee.

Adding heat in general is considered bad in the coffee world, like reheating any other food, really, but adding heat to maintain temperature is actually fine.

The issue coffee people take with hotplates and the like is that it doesn't heat evenly, it cooks the bottom layer. Something that adds heat evenly and gently is fine.

Although I just pour my fresh coffee into a thermos, because a good thermos will keep it at least warm all day.

Although I just pour my fresh coffee into a thermos, because a good thermos will keep it at least warm all day.

This is the way.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

How are you getting through the day without coffee? That's crazy.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 days ago (2 children)

My solution: have a single cup that you have to find and clean before you can have a fresh cup of coffee.

Also: don't be hard on yourself because of these things. It's how your brain works, it makes it you.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I do this for every kind of beverage, have a favorite exclusive of each of these:

  • beer glass

  • water bottle

  • coffee mug

  • whiskey glass

  • wine glass

It's nice just using and cleaning one for each of these instead of having glasses clutter the sink from every time I get thirsty and need a drink.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I just keep a thermal carafe on my desk so I can warm up my cup every 30 minutes. The fresh smell keeps me from forgetting.

I see a lot of adhd posts on Lemmy… all of which boil down to “normally I’d be a an asshole but I’m adhd so it’s a trait…”

This is the first that really seems quirky and unfortunate.

The red cup to the other red cup: “Hello again, Frank…”

There's a coffee shop in Austin with two drinks named after these guys :D

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Everybody here needs to see Triangle (2009).

Great, two coffees for me to drink! I am such a nice person, I made my future self a present.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Great, two coffees for me to forget to drink! 🙃

Tomorrow me is gonna pretty stoked for triple-coffee day! Think about how much they're gonna get done!!!! (I might sneak in a nap this afternoon in anticipation, lol)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And this is why do cold brew. Worst that can happen is that I forget that I have it in the fridge

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It tastes better, too. I just wish I had a good way to make it at home.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All you need is a french press and they're pretty cheap. You just put the coffee and water in the fridge overnight 8-10h and it's good by morning. Way better than regular coffee imo. I'm sure there's snobbier ways to make cold brew but I value simplicity

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

for large batches all you really need is a food safe container and some kind of filter like cheese cloth. i find it easier to cleanup and maintain than a lot of the more expensive ones sold as well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 16 hours ago

Dang that's simple. Props, I'll give it a try Thanks

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Gonna second the French Press in the Fridge method. It's the one that works best for me; cleanup is pretty easy, and the only problem is trying to fit it in the fridge without fully depressing the plunger.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I most often find food, I actually drink the coffee most of the time

[–] [email protected] 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The saddest thing is finding some leftovers you were looking forward to enjoying forgotten in the microwave

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 hours ago

I know... I love food and have a huge thing for not wasting food too

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

This is actually why I only drink iced coffee. Hot drinks get left in the graveyard dimension of my brain and are too time sensitive

[–] not3ottersinacoat 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

I always use the same cup and whenever I can't find it it's because it's still in the microwave

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

I drink the room temp coffee as my punishment. Sometimes I'll even drink yesterday's cup, too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Lol I sometimes microwave something, then FORGET TO EAT IT 😭

(I have not ever been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Sometimes I read these kinds of memes and think to myself: “Phew, I'm doing p good, still!”

I'm sorry for your coffee, OP.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Clearly you just don't need the coffee, so you might as well just save that money.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I almost spit out my coffee from this meme!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

An old friend of mine would often leave cups of coffee around his house that he had forgotten about. My favorite was when I found one in his freezer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

What I started doing was setting timers for things like that. A timer when the coffee is ready to drink could work for example.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

The forgotten coffee problem was my main reason for switching to oatmilk. If it stands around uncooled with cow milk for too long it grosses me out, but oatmilk isn't as volatile so I don't mind drinking yesterday's coffee.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

I use microwave for a lot of things. Also the rep would bring me back to the microwave
