The revolution will not be televised.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not until it becomes violent, at which point it'll be demonized by Media.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

it'll be ~~demonized~~ monetized by Media.

Agreed.

this is one of the instances where they would gladly give up the profits to undermine the movement.

if it ever becomes an big threat to them, that is.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The revolution will not be brought to you by Xerox

In four parts without commercial interruptions

/50501 here and on reddit.

Why would the news, controlled and operated by oligarchs, give people protesting oligarchs any coverage?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Do you think reddit is immune to the oligarchs? I don't think so at all.

Edit: What I'm saying is: post here rather than on reddit. There are no current updates in the Lemmy community. And I'm assuming that the discussion is taking place on reddit because everyone is somehow still there. Why is that? Why is everyone still there when it's clear as day that reddit is so rotten that Aaron Swartz would roll over in his grave if he had to witness that.

Well no, but the question was why is there no mainstream media coverage.

I've posted a couple things here on lemmy. Let's be honest though, the reach of reddit is orders of magnitude higher than here

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Just another question, where would you ideally like to see protest news posted on lemmy? Yes there's the 50501 community, I also post on DSA community. Where else?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Thanks for doing that!

Maybe also [email protected] and [email protected]

After the big one I think around early or mid-March, I remember seeing it on the front page of CNN the next morning. It was buried in a lower part later I'm the day, but it was at least front and center the morning after the protests.

Even Fox has covered them a lot. I've seen this all spring. They aren't completely ignoring this.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

To be fair, I don't consume mainstream media whatsoever anymore. After reading Manufacturing Consent, I see no point. I get all my news from socials or alt news sources like Democracy Now!, counter punch, it's going down, and Mother Jones, etc ...

[–] [email protected] 34 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This trend of non-coverage will probably continue if we don't think of something different. I for one rarely go to my downtown area so it could be easy for regular people at least to miss what's happened.

It's a little more on the dangerous side but I had an idea of a "stop in" rather than a "sit in". Basically we pick a day and time and no matter where you are, you just come to a stop for one minute, not speaking or making noise, just being still. It's something people can do anywhere and only takes a minute of your time, but if enough people do it then it would look kind of crazy, like something from a sci-fi movie. There's like no way this would go uncovered or at least unGoogled.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

Economic black outs. They can't ignore money.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago

"Thousands join anti-Trump protests across US" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czjn0410e3zo

[–] [email protected] 36 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Every time something happens in my area I find out about it the next day.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Do you have a very good print regional newspaper or are you saying that these protests are not worth real-time coverage?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Not enough advertising ahead of time. i saw a farmers protest in my local town. The day after it happened. On some obscure unrelated subreddit. So like theres coverage, just not ahead of time.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Neither. I just never hear they are going to happen, only that they have happened. The earliest I have heard of any of the recent protest actions was while I was at work and reading that it was already under way.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

There's a protest scheduled for today in Fresno. I'd be there right now if I had gas money or a ride. Only learned about it on Thursday; didn't have time to plan anything. 😮‍💨

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Those reading, check in with your friends and family, not just so they know about it, but to help each other with transportation!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Hell yeah! It's huge.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 days ago

The guardian apparently wrote an article that was shared in .world/c/news : https://lemmy.world/post/28450666

[–] [email protected] 33 points 4 days ago (2 children)

There is a 50501 community on piefed, as well as a 50501 instance.

[–] mp3 22 points 4 days ago

[email protected] for an instance-agnostic link to the main community

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago

That helps me a lot. Thank you very much.

Thousands of demonstrators rallied at hundreds of events on Saturday (...)

Thousands? Were there just 100 protestors at 100 events? That would be already 10,000...WTF...

Edit: If this is true (thousands in Portland alone) - and why wouldn't it be - it's a massive understatement by the New York Times...and this is prolly one of the few more or less independent/somewhat objective outlets left. C'mon...

[–] [email protected] 22 points 4 days ago

Protests tend to be underreported if peaceful, and over-reported if any violence or vandalism.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago

They did that with the last one too. They tryna quiet us

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

It's funny that you get salty when the Times uses 'thousands' then put in a port that also uses 'thousands.'

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 days ago

I was listening to the radio and they mentioned it so I don't think it's radio silence, but it also wasn't covered in depth either.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Theres a website for 50501 and the Hands off Movement, you basically have to check their websites regularly. Check for local movements too. Facebook has groups for locals.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They also have a lemmy server and community, [email protected] and [email protected] (mirror of their reddit posts).

50501.chat/communities has a list of state specific comms.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

We still need to find a way to reach the boomers. TV radio and word of mouth seems to work the best for that age group. Or if your young plan to bring your boomers with you and share info directly! Some people need protest buddies, and information

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Bluesky

Also, here's the fiftyfiftyone site where you can find information about a protest near you.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago

you can check this account on bsky, they repost lots of people who participate https://bsky.app/profile/50501movement.bsky.social

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 days ago

Al Jazeera English covered, even took an interview with Hunter Dunn (national press coordinator).

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago

On Mastodon! Follow @[email protected] and @[email protected]

While we're at it, also follow @[email protected] for summaries of legal procedures.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Also: https://www.fiftyfifty.one/ Seems like a direct source. You can search for events near you and who is organizing them.
