I have a few questions in general:

  • ICE is being used by Trump as a terrorist unit that "disappears" people - immigrants, dissenters, probably anyone who Trump doesn't like in the future.
  • Is ICE a federal agency? If so, is it under Trump's direct control? Do the states have any say in what ICE can do in their territory and what not? Can the state's governor instruct the state's police force to stop ICE?
  • Can it be reasonably demanded by the people that blue states take a stance against ICE by instructing their police to stop or hinder ICE? Has that been done so far?

The reason why this matter is very clearly because Trump is using ICE to terrorize the people, to intimidate political opponents and disappear dissenters. Can the state protect people within its own territory?

I think all of this was answered by the deployment of Marines in LA in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act.

You really gotta love when a British paper decides it want's to be a booster for the American Fascism train.

Well, when they finally declare open season, guess who will be among the first.. Yeah, the Enablers.

When will these people understand that there is a class war. It's well underway. It's been underway for hundreds of years. We're just the only side that's been taking casualties. The veneer of civilization is so very thin at this point. It's just a whisper at this point. That's the only thing protecting them. They view people like these Democratic socialists as the threat. But no, this guy is one of their last hopes. He's one of the last things saying maybe we can patch it and keep civilization going. Because without people like him we're going to start dragging you from your houses, hanging you in trees and gutting you. So pick your poison.

CNBC financial news channel anchor Joe Kernen compared New York to Batman’s crime-riddled Gotham. “ They’re taking Wall Streeters and making them walk out onto the ice in the East River, And, and then they fall through. I mean there is a class warfare that’s going on.”

"Raising taxes on people who have more wealth than they could spend in a hundred lifetimes is the same as murder."

I cannot empathize with anyone who says that shit with a straight face. You've either abandoned any principles you may have had to spew propaganda, or are so completely delusional that you actually believe it.

Oh they find a way. Bezos wedding was 40 to 50 million euros.

By the way, i read somewhere that a big reason why the Mafia existed in southern italy for so long is largely to keep foreign investors out. No foreign investor would invest in a place where he might be gunned down. That is why the Mafia saw itself as a "protector of the local culture". They tried to keep American influence out of their country.

I'm just saying it because it just randomly came to my mind, not because it's relevant here.

Well, it is a pretty fun idea.

billionaire hedge funder Bill Ackman said he was “gravely concerned” because he believed the leftwing candidate’s policies would trigger an exodus of the wealth “If the city of New York is going socialist, I will definitely close, sell, or move.”

Big fucking rich guys can't handle paying $20k to keep their city above water and create a better future for everyone. Even after they have more than that coming back in fed tax cuts. Good riddance to parasites, go try to do business from Montana or something.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 day ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

Mamdani should just try to tax the life out of them if they try to leave the city.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That's part of the beauty of his plan: the taxes aren't predicated on them LIVING in NYC, but rather on them DOING BUSINESS there.

That way, not only can't they escape their responsibilities by relocating (a favorite pastime of billionaires), but all OTHER billionaires who want to do business in one of the financial nexuses of the world (which is very nearly all of them worldwide) have to pay closer to their fair share too!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Look I already said he's a 10 you don't need to sell me on it 🤣

Man I'm really hoping we see some cool things come out of this. I'm not holding my breath but I am hoping for it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 hours ago

I think it's good that people talk about it.

Trump had a "Project 2025" playbook developed and ready before he took office, so he immediately knew what to do, on "day one". That gave him a huge speed advantage.

I think the left should do the same thing. Write detailed policy explanations before taking office. This way, we can act faster and gain speed.

That is why it makes sense to discuss the policies before he's even in office.

There's no need to threaten like that, the billionaire bracket can absorb 2%, and they know it. It's a bluff and FUD is the only play they have. Some will move loudly for a political statement and the media they own will play up those stories, but reality few will give up NYC lifestyle and convenience over the proposed rate.

Edit- side thought... It would be so easy for one or two to step up and announce they are proud to support their city, to care for their neighbors, and embrace the proposal as a badge of pride and accomplishment. But no, this is america land of the greed

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Nah the rich have had it easy. They directly benefited from the policies of New York and they should have to pay if they want to leave.

Let's call it wealth redistribution.

Also I see your point but I think massive exit taxes should be charged regardless

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, but that's a pipe dream. Just move on.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Imma keep talking about it until somebody does it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago

Feel free I guess.

They established them nationally under W. No reason not to reflect that locally.

They sometimes do make good on their threats and the wealth concentrated in the northeast is absurd enough to make a significant difference at times

David Tepper (hedge fund manager, net worth 11.4 billion, extreme income of $700 million per year) left New Jersey in 2016 over tax rates for Florida.

His move cost the state $140 million in tax revenue. It wasn’t enough to destroy the state obviously, but it was a noticeable hit to revenues. It also gave media great PR against taxing the wealthy

https://www.schiffsovereign.com/tax/the-state-of-new-jersey-just-signed-its-own-death-warrant-23939/ headline is literally “New Jersey just signed its own death warrant”

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2016/04/06/billionaire-to-save-hundreds-of-millions-from-florida-move.html “billionaire to save hundreds of millions from Florida move”

Etc. of course in our propagandized society very few/no media outlets focus on him paying his fair share (or the ethics of his extreme wealth in the first place). They all fellate him for being such a savvy businessman and skipping out on his civic duty is an extension of that. Fuck public roads and schools, this guy needs a net worth of 11.48 billion instead of 11.42.

He eventually relocated back to NJ in 2020 fwiw. He claims the move wasn’t necessarily about taxes and tbf he never publicly said it was. It is potentially possible he just had a family issue or something and the media ran with to propagandize the situation. he remains a registered voter in Florida, whatever that means

Imo he came back bc he realized the northeast is great. It’s nice to visit the rest of the country but if you live in the rest of the country I’m sorry to say this but your pizza is terrible

the amount of fear and anger coming from these people all because they'll earn less money is fucking nauseating. oh no, Mamdani might use your money to help everyone in NYC including you. the horror. you're right.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 23 hours ago

And this is the issue that was worth having a meltdown over. Not any of the kidnapping, not Trump's tariffs and market manipulation, not Adams' corruption or Cuomo's COVID scandals. Their utter silence on everything else makes their current freak out transparently hollow. None of them are worried about NYC, they're worried about the idea of the uberwealthy getting taxed to make life better for everyone else catching on.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, but also, people at that level do not, strictly speaking, “earn” money. They extract it from the labor of others.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

very true. i am using "earn" here as a synonym for merely obtaining. it should be read as thieve, as in "they'll thieve less money."

Can’t let the poors realize that government can actually be effective and help them …

"Hot commie summer salami" sounds like an excellent gay porn.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 14 hours ago

oh yeah, how'd the NYC election turn out?

Wall Street grift fears being exposed as such.

Turns out they control both sides of the establishment and are waging a class war surprised–pikachu.jpg

[–] phoenixz 25 points 1 day ago

This is so billionaires saying that they don't want to pay their fair share. They don't want other residents to pay their fair share either because they could be paying that share to the billionaires instead but if they have to pay that share to the government, who is going to keep these poor billionaires fed?

This is them literally saying "I'm an asshole, I hate everyone that is not me, now vote for my candidate!"
