Europe has a long history of fragmented space efforts. France is the leading European nation for space tech and coordinates many of its efforts with ESA. So do other countries, but there are also 13 separate national space agencies. Will this fragmentation help or hinder spaceplane efforts? Maybe having three teams trying different approaches means exploring more options.

Spaceplane 2 - VORTEX, a French reusable mini-space shuttle that will launch on rockets.

Spaceplane 3 - Britain/ESA - INVICTUS - A reusable spaceplane for LEO using the tech previously worked on by Reaction Engines/Sabre.

Out of these three, the German effort seems most advanced. It has already successfully tested elements of its technology, and it aims for a launch date (2027) far nearer than the others.

The good people at Raven Ridge Wildlife Center shared this post and I found it fascinating how and why the eyes change color so many times. What an studying way to determine the bird's age!

We have recently been admitting a large number of Cooper's hawks, and the finders are often surprised by how quickly we can identify them as nestlings or juveniles. One of the first distinguishing features is the color of their eyes. Did you know that many young birds have blue or light-colored eyes due to their limited exposure to light and lower melanin production in early life? As they mature, their eyes usually darken as melanin production increases.

Melanin is the pigment that determines the color of eyes, skin, and feathers. In young birds, melanin production is still developing, leading to lighter eye colors, often blue or gray. Limited exposure to sunlight in the nest contributes to the lighter eye color of baby birds. As hawks grow and are exposed to more sunlight, their melanin production increases, causing their eyes to darken-typically to yellow or orange-as they transition to adulthood.

While many raptors exhibit this change in eye color, the specific colors and timelines can vary between species. For example, the eye color of a Cooper's hawk changes from bluish-gray to yellow and then to red. This information is valuable to our team, especially when we request pictures, which is why we often ask, "What color are the bird's eyes?"

The fossil fuel industry pumped an extra 389m tonnes of carbon pollution into the atmosphere last year by needlessly flaring gas, a World Bank report has found, in an “enormous waste” of fuel that heats the planet by about as much as the country of France.

Flaring is a way to get rid of gases such as methane that arise when pumping oil out of the ground. While it can sometimes keep workers safe by relieving buildups of pressure, the practice is routine in many countries because it is often cheaper to burn gas than to capture, transport, process and sell it.

Global gas flaring rose for a second year in a row to reach its highest level since 2007, the report found, despite growing concerns about energy security and climate breakdown.

Maceo Snipes Shot After Voting (1946)

On this day in 1946, Maceo Snipes, the first black person to vote in Georgia's Taylor County, was shot by white supremacists, dying after doctors refused to give him a blood transfusion due to segregation. The violence outraged a teenage MLK Jr.

Snipes was a World War II veteran who had returned to his hometown of Butler, Georgia. In 1946, a provocative campaign issue was whether or not black people should be allowed to vote in primary elections. Georgia's Jim Crow government had been enforcing whites-only primary elections, but this had been struck down by the Supreme Court earlier that year.

Despite threats from the Ku Klux Klan, Snipes cast his vote in the primary election on July 17th that year, becoming the first black person to vote in Taylor County, according to the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project. The following day, four white supremacists showed up to Maceo's house, interrupting dinner with his wife, and shot him in the back. The man who shot him, Edward Williamson, was also a World War II veteran.

Snipes was taken to the hospital, where he waited for several hours before the doctors would perform the surgery to remove the bullets. A white doctor told his family that Maceo needed a transfusion, but refused to give him one, citing a lack of "black blood" in the hospital. Without a transfusion, Snipes died two days later. Snipes' funeral was held in the middle of the night due to death threats for anyone who dared attend.

In court, Maceo's killers falsely pleaded self-defense, claiming that Snipes owed them money and attacked them with a knife. Both the coroner and jury determined their actions to be justified. Snipes was one of five black people lynched following the 1946 elections - two couples, Roger and Dorothy Malcom and George and Mae Murray Dorsey - were kidnapped, beaten, and shot. Mae was seven months pregnant at the time.

This outbreak of white supremacist violence, and the hypocrisy surrounding it, outraged a teenage Martin Luther King Jr., then a student at Morehouse College. He wrote a letter to the editor of "The Atlanta Constitution", stating:

"I often find when decent treatment for the Negro is urged, a certain class of people hurry to raise the scarecrow of social mingling and intermarriage. These questions have nothing to do with the case. And most people who kick up this kind of dust know that it is simple dust to obscure the real question of rights and opportunities. It is fair to remember that almost the total of race mixture in America has come, not at Negro initiative, but by the acts of those very white men who talk loudest of race purity. We aren’t eager to marry white girls, and we would like to have our own girls left alone by both white toughs and white aristocrats."
